The essays I could write on environmental determinism applied to Cindy Cendrillon... The fact that Cindy's mother comes from a tropical island while her dad is from Ireland... how Ricky is from Manchester and Cindy must pretend to be an Arab princess to catch his attention at the ball... Oh the essays
Things I liked about Cindy Cendrillon (2002) as a Cinderella adaptation:
Using La Légende de Rose Latulipe as the reason why Cindy must go back home by midnight (or at least that's what I thought they would do with it... but they never mention it again)
The dad being a pilot with a woman in every (air)port. (Before I got English subtitles I thought he was a cruise captain which admittedly I liked even better)
The stepmom being cruel to Cindy because of racism. Another interesting idea that doesn't get explored at all.
Other than that it's really terrible at following Cinderella's plot beats and general vibe. Why would you have an almost engaged guy as the "prince", make his fiancée commit suicide, have Cinderella's secret identity be discovered in the first 10 minutes of act 2 and spend so much time on the stepsisters' love lives? I get why it wasn't that successful.
Still hilarious, but not a good Cinderella adaptation.
