Web Series: 'Queens' Explores Adulting and Asian American Sisterhood
Created by Cindy Chu and starring Spring Inés Peña, Carolina Do, and Cindy Chu, this award-winning brash comedy follows three Asian American Queens natives as they struggle to make ends meet while realizing being adults isn’t what their immigrant parents taught them it’d be. Best friends, Sarah (Cindy Chu), Kim (Spring Inés Peña) and Gia (Carolina Do) learn that relationship goals and career achievements don’t necessarily equate to success, and experience the complicated intersection of being first and second-generation Asian Americans.
SERIES CREATOR STATEMENT:
QUEENS is an ode to my borough, where I was born and raised, and for the urban Asian American women who rarely see themselves reflected in the media.
The Homies: Sarah, Gia, and Kim, are inspired by my childhood friends. We were a trio with opposite personalities and family backgrounds. One was incredibly direct and didn’t care for anyone’s nonsense, was born in Bolivia and of Korean descent. Another was of mixed Taiwanese and European heritage, never took anything seriously, and failed out of college. Then there’s me, somewhere between the both of them, from a conservative Taiwanese family, but took the artist’s path despite my family’s opinions. We were brash, loud, and constantly joking on each other, but always had each other’s backs.
The industry is moving in a more inclusive direction where minorities and women have further opportunities to tell our own stories. With the huge box office hit of Crazy Rich Asians, and the slew of Asian American related films and articles that have come out since #AsianAugust, we have united together to support those works and to share our personal struggles of what it's like growing up in America. We want more media that shows our narratives and normalizes our experiences. Our time is now.
