Wynn Stewart - I Was Just Walking Out the Door (1969)
Wynn Stewart was one the originators of the Bakersfield sound. Here’s a nice tune written by prolific Texas songwriter Cindy Walker, featuring Clarence White on guitar.
“The Next Voice You Hear.” Hank Snow’s earliest release of this song was I guess 1954, so this is a version recorded 10 years later. He isn’t an act typically associated with the “Nashville sound” era of country music, but this is a good example of its unique impact, or rather the impact of 1960s Nashville record producers. The slip-note piano and background vocals bring it closer to pop than anything, like most mainstream 1960s country.
Another important note is that Hank Snow was recording on RCA Victor under Chet Atkins, who in a way introduced slip-note piano to the country music field.
Merle Haggard – “Cherokee Maiden” Song written by Cindy Walker
Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys - Dusty Skies (1940)
Cindy Walker wrote this cowboy song set during the Dust Bowl. Classic
These ain’t tears in my eyes Just sand from these dusty skies
