Workshop Projects
Cine: The cine workshop is focused on Cinematography practice, on the first session we discussed useful books and practitioners. Master Shots Vol 1 & 2 - Christopher Kenworthy Cinematography Screencraft - Peter Ettedgui ‘Visions of Light: The Art of Cinematography’ (1992) Already I felt more inspired, and have plans to purchase some of the books mentioned. In the second session we each discussed an image or screen cap of a film that we found had an impact on ourselves for whatever reason and I chose one from Moonrise Kingdom. I am an avid fan of Robert D’Yeoman and admired his use of colour and how the images on screen seem almost like an interactive picture book in how the camera is positioned so central and with long, steady pans. The film conveys interesting movement and action, without the need for fast paced camera movement or editing. We also practiced with a lighting kit, to get familiar with all the positions for staging the lights and how they can effect an image. Finally we were handed a box of super 8 film between 3 and we must create a short, 90 second piece. Soon my group and I will meet up to discuss ideas for our experimental film. Script Writing: I took MANY notes in this session, as I feel it is not one of my strongest fields within constructing a film. We discussed how to write interesting characters, to enter a scene when the action has already begun (no starting scripts with ‘hello’!) and we took part in an activity where we were asked to write down two different names then pass them around until we were left with another’s papers - we then created a character each using the names and developed their back stories, motives and personalities. Our goal for the next session is to return with a maximum 3 page script or 1 page treatment for this character.
