TENET: Just 'Feel It'!
Oye Oye, TENET, Christopher Nolan’s film about secret agents solving secret things to prevent (secret?!?) world annihilation and, "something something spoiler spoiler" time, is out y'all!!!!!!
After months and months of wait and discussions - still ongoing - we can stop wondering and find out for ourselves whether it is worth it (mostly for the studio to make money and the economy to keep going, one can assume otherwise it would have come out after a vaccine is found or things are under control....) So on a health/personal/human/"bend the curve logic", it is probs not worth it no matter how sanitized the counters, handrails, or (not enough) seats between people are if, in the end, they don’t wear mask/talk/eat/f$#@! knows what they do since they know it mostly only helps others! Many articles from trustworthy sources will tell you more or less 'NO to not really,' so it is really up to you to assess the situation. BUT on a cinematic level, TENET is “Believe The hype” 2020 edition (remember our 2019 pick was PARASITE, and it went all the way!!!) It seems TENET has fulfilled its prophecy and became the savior of theaters as its maker hoped it would be (hence Nolan can be content knowing he is a sort of "messiah"... He will be revered or worshiped even more so now and likewise, be reviled or condemned for putting another "auteur artsy pretentious movie" out there all while ICUs are still occupied by COVID patients in places where cineplexes are open) So you do you and your conscience is yours. Safe cinemas might somehow pose the same risks as packed Wholefoods on Saturday afternoon so going there might not be an entirely evil plan; only one with minimal stress and guilt afterward! lol And at least you are (hopefully!) not going from one of those “Corona parties” to the cinemas …(stress time 100 and vodoo on you time infinity and beyond! )
Anyhoo, friends and film folks, we ain't here to only polemize, so here are ten(et!?!) reasons to see TENET in theaters ONLY IF if you can do it safely by wearing as much PPE as one can wear... AND PLEASE DON'T EAT/DRINK IN THERE/THEATERS: STOP SELLING CONCESSION PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! (It might be more effective in providing a safe environment than the whole welcomed “hygiene theater”...- seriously starting to think maybe a mask or a plastic bubble pod with a lock that time-out after the movie might be the most optimal solution!!! Or *minor spoiler* do like TENET and make it unbreathable without mask )
*spoiler level: low low*
**Language warning: low-ish!**
1. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... That's right another masterpiece from the maestro that ticks all the boxes. Everything we like about a Nolan grandiose, cerebral, precise, crisp, deep, and “INTENSE”! But with added layers of cool and may we dare to say; fun (yes you heard that right fun as in funny instead of the ushe' gloom and doom!) There is also a vigorousity and different "energetic energy" emanating from TENET with its several climaxes! Like in DUNKIRK things get stressful! And the music heightens this to perfection. Correspondingly a Chris Nolan's thing, we still can't hear what people are saying because of their masks...(See it wasn't Hardy's fault!) But hey, on-point case of Art imitating life, especially since it is a matter of life and death in our present time and TENET's future ...or is it past!?!
2. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”...With a very “Nolan story” with time/mind-f$!#kery and such!... Ha well, it would not be the former without Time... 'If you're lost, you can look and you will find it Time after time' in all those movies! You might find it, but you surely might not understand it all (who really does!) But time and the technology behind the mesmerizing whole TENET inversion theory will blow your socks off no doubt while giving you a headache (and you'll lose another sleepless night reading about how and why online!) Although it clearly feels more "fact-based" than its unofficial groundbreaking prequel INCEPTION and Kip Thorne’ Nobel prize knowledge helped make it so. Yet TENET science is more grounded and slightly less cray-cray than INTERSTELLAR which keep also consulted on (or maybe simply there’s no McConaughey to bring it to another level of meta and emo!)
3. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”...With a very “Nolan story” with time/mind-f$!#kery and such!...BUT with the action/spy genre spicy twist... Sure INCEPTION and DUNKIRK, and above all THE DARK KNIGHT trilogy were all actions oriented with a bit of spying on the enemies (cuz you know they 'got enemies, got a lot of enemies' and lot of people tryna drain their energy! (or reverse it!?!) So TENET seems to fall more in the category of: “only this man can solve this mystery and solve the world” but all those other non-superhero movies, from Bond to many of Cruise’s movies, got nothing on TENET and our protagonist! About that...
4. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”...With a very “Nolan story” with time/mind-f$!#kery and such!...BUT with the action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... Chiefly, The Protagonist (yep that's his character's name) John David Washington and his acolyte Robert Pattinson, Himesh Patel, and, the compulsory cameo by end Michael Caine who did not disappoint in the most Michael Caine manner you would think he's auditioning for his own role on the next THE TRIP. So TENET, as it is, "rests on the shoulder" (as in it would have been an equally great movie but completely different with any other actors no matter how talented) of the man who sets all this in motion; Washington. One would be tempted to call him Washington “junior” in an industry where “senior” is such a legend that dominated(still) for so long but it truly feels wrong as he is clearly a performer who did not need or want to use his creed ( we've all see BLACKKKLANSMAN!). He got charisma, acting skills, attitude, swag, some jokes, and he can do his own damn stunts thanks to his sports background (as seen in Baller) which came very handy (and the official behind-the-scenes bring the receipts showing him performing jaw-dropping stunts!) In a nutshell if you don’t know him now you know one of and he should be nominated for an Oscar for this performance otherwise what is real anymore (imagine the showdown for the age if he ends up being nominated against Denzel for his Coel’s movie next!!)
Next, we have (Sir we also know it will be coming at some point!) Robert Pattinson. Millions of years after that vampire movie he’s done it all, he’s now the most sought after and oddest indie/auteur character-actor and after seeing TENET it makes total sense that a year from now he is going to be the Dark Knight! But what left some dumbstruck is that he was the comical breezer in here! Then everybody else was satisfactory from the also aforementioned Himesh Patel who only pops up in few scenes but brought what was needed and only him could have giveth, to the smallest bit players who will be remembered.
And then there’s, Kenneth Branagh showing us his best cliched villainous Russian villain! Not revealing much about that, but he looked like the "perfect" abuser to be despised (almost making us forget and forgive Artemis Fowl!)
5. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... With a very “Nolan story” involving time/mind-f$!#kery and such... BUT with an action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... And it also makes History! TENET was...Pricy! Will eventually end up in the top #50 of all time. (especially after the double maybe even triple marketing wave needed due to the pandemic) But it is tons of money wisely spent on making Nolan’s vision and dream come true and it shows. (particularly on the big screen) Besides, historically speaking there's not a whole lotta movie with POC characters even less so as protagonistS on that hot list apart from BLACK PANTHER (Wakanda forever for Boseman) and something with Will Smith (end of list!?! Ohh and let's not even think about or women, or movie made by non-white men but that's another discussion for another day...EVERY DAMN DAY!)
6. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... With a very “Nolan story” involving time/mind-f$!#kery and such... BUT with an action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... And it also makes History! Oh but, of course, it is a mind-bending sight… We've all seen the trailers or images or read about the film unless we hibernated from the last year, but TENET involves HUGE things crashing for real making HUGEE explosion and tense stunt atop of vehicles. Frankly, those descriptions could be on the FAST AND FURIOUS we‘re only missing “family” and coronas and beefs!!! But TENET give Toretto & co a run for their money but makes it real and "slightly" less bonkerz! Apart from those splashy things, TENET got more where that comes from creating effects never seen before (the double explosion?!?). And thanks to the director common his color palette (tho it seems to some smaller degree brighter than usual or maybe just less dark! ) less flashy images than other blockbusters it seems very real but that's because it is!
7. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... With a very “Nolan story” involving time/mind-f$!#kery and such... BUT with an action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... And it also makes History! Oh but, of course, it is a mind-bending sight…& sound experience... TENET's beats will shake you to the core, it is is the precious cherry on top of this Michelin-star cake, by no other than the Ludwig Göransson. Truly “have some fun, this beat is sick when you take on a ride on Imax seat!” Sadly the best way to enjoy this ride, or in any theater with an optimal sound that’ll resonate in your bone. Göransson's score is more “classical” and with more conventional instruments than his better-known work on Disney projects, but we are still hoping/expecting to see his name on many more awards as he really hyped up the tension and energetic pace of the action scenes.
8. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... With a very “Nolan story” involving time/mind-f$!#kery and such... BUT with an action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... And it also makes History! Oh but, of course, it is a mind-bending sight…& sound experience...Realness... Reading about the production and “knowing” the dude, it is no surprise that he will try his dammest to push himself and everyone to achieve what "must" be done. From Imax cameras, technology, making everything bigger better, to the skillful work of one of Nolan most loyal collaborators Hoyte Van Hoytema, to minimal CGI/green screen uses; lots of practical effect ( *see plane!) meaning cast and stunt did crazy things achieve all those backward motion and talking. Talk about realness!
9. Watch TENET because it is “a Nolan”... With a very “Nolan story” involving time/mind-f$!#kery and such... BUT with an action/spy genre spicy twist...Served by a perfectly cast Protagonist & co... And it also makes History! Oh but, of course, it is a mind-bending sight…& sound experience...Realness...from the get-go thanks to that bombastic opening! (Have you not seen that more than convincing prologue?!)... The heart-racing, explosive opening, that was also the prologue hinting just enough to make us drool for months about the possibility of TENET without giving away anything is, undoubtedly, one of the best ever made! 10 second in and the action is tense and INTENSE, it sets the perfect mood, with a sharp sound, high-level dizzying visual, impressive effects, masterful direction, powerful action, and acting, then mix it well and bind it all with precise editing, it captures the anxiety, pressure and the whole "feel" of the film.
It is a testament and a great excerpt demonstrating that Tenet will and should be - as expected - nominated for everything and ideally win for technical and artistic elements, from production design all the way to best lead actor and directing [no offense to Del Toro but Nolan absolutely deserved that DUNKIRK Oscar, so hopefully no f$#ck-up this time - unless someone else comes along and makes Nolan a 6 times nominee and the 1-time winner (in the future!) of a "life achievement award"! because if he doesn't get it for TENET, his next films better be so good our eye-balls drop (or competition must be real fierce!) for him to win once alas...)
Ultimately, it will get nominated in let say 6-9 Academy Award (maybe 10, c'mon FURY ROAD did it and frankly it was not all that #sorrynotsorryatall !) including most likely best picture, seen as this is playing out so far, but it is on of those film that is probably too polarizing and brainy for a consensus, yes "best movie ever" PARASITE did it and one should still have faith but there was something more universal (and rational!) about it. Although have to say there is an "eat the rich" vibe coming from TENET's or The Protagonist that was delicious!
10. (Have you not seen that more than convincing prologue?!)...So just 'feel it'! Here it is, our final and Ten(et!) reason *Minor spoiler here, as TENET might (or might not) have something to do with 10*
We talk about the "feel" of the film earlier and that is something to, in the end, have to be experienced which is very VERY important as written in the scrip TENET: 'Don't try to understand it. Feel it.' And that can never be more true than in any other film from its maker. But we cannot talk about the experience without going back to our beginning statement, what makes this movie so great: the cinematic experience AT THE CINEMA... Something primordial to its appreciation but that makes Nolan a genius and also a moron as are, WB, theater owners, everybody else in between including most likely us viewers who took all the precautions for 5 months to then go with N95 mask and glove to the movie for 2h+! This is the movie we are blindly ready to literally die for (or in the case of exhibitors/businesses, ready ok kill for...) It's on us to make sure those who did not participate do not suffer the consequences...
Full disclosure: living alone+ wfh+ getting groceries delivered if feeling unwell + going to indoor places 8/10 for essentials or food BUT always masked + not seeing anybody at all indoors and maybe only a handful of 100% healthy young individuals - who've already put themselves at risks anyways because work or stupidness, so it won't matter much to them seeing friends at beaches/parks/trails considering they might also go to restaurant /bar/parties...-So being able to do this, going to the movie now while also knowing you are not putting others at risk is indeed A PRIVILEGE that should be used sensibly and carefully...Even if it for something unnecessary! But if you don't have that privilege (outside of going to work because money is needed)hopefully you are doing the best you can to enjoy maybe the best thing that will happen to you this year while being the safest :+1 Otherwise may the Entropic force be with you and may you not cross path with compromised folks and elders for 2 weeks…
To be fair we knew this would happen and be an issue, and now not sure we are ready to go back because also, not sure there is/will be anything out on the big screens better than TENET anytime soon. Even other movies that demand an in-theater viewing might (hopefully) be grateful enough to offer VOD/PREMIUM VOD. So guess this pandemic truly changed something for the better since we realized that more than 75% of the new releases are best enjoyed at home where a small screen doesn't affect the overall quality or enjoyment (99% of a romance, comedy, drama without technical wonders, and more or less half of the horror, comedy, mainstream or festival indie fare type as these be elevated with audiences' reactions. But considering we often see those in empty rooms, the point of going to the movies for those is now seriously questionable! But maybe that's because we used to go to see E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G! Us, the 1% of moviegoers will surely be a niche loss for multiplexes or small theaters so hopefully, they do online rentals so we can still support them year-round and they don't get destroyed.
To stop digressing, it happened and we got out of nearly half a year of iso and no "event movie" for TENET! And now we have Bajillions questions on top of wondering 'am I stupid even with my modestly average knowledge and understanding of science, logic and things!?". So since we are not those who go to see movies twice (not in theaters, not even at home after, maybe a scene here and there but never the full film unless we watched it so long ago/as a child! Don't @ us that's how we roll for a multitude of reasons, but also, “ain't nobody got time for that” with all the movies out there one needs to see anyway?!) But with this one, we will definitely welcome a watch with commentaries/explanations/answers to all our questions! (like what's up with this rock where did it come from, when did this one die - for real, - how come it doesn't work all the time, and when does this exactly happen!?!? Haaaa Mr. Nolan you did it again ;)
MORAL OF THE STORY: 9/10 *****
