Walang Dulo. Watched this again with the Nanay early this week and realized that this film still talks about the most important, relevant, and critical questions we need to be asking about filmmaking in particular, cultural work in general. Not bad for a movie made in 1971. Pagdating Sa Dulo was written and directed by #IshmaelBernal. It will be screened this Saturday, March 17, 3:00PM at the CCP. Memory. Tito Ronnie was the best seatmate ever while watching Ishmael Bernal’s “Pabling,” with so many side stories (hindi ako art director, propsman lang), and honesty (takot ako kay Ishma eh. kay Jorge rin), and insight (ang gusto ko kay Ishma, laging buo lahat ng setting, kung nasa kuwarto, kita mo yung buong kuwarto, ipapakita niya yung buong kuwarto), and laughter (may tshirt si Ishma na suot noon, white, nakasulat in blue: PAHIPO). But also memory. In one scene in Pabling a younger Ronnie appears on screen: “O, nandito pala ako!” Laughter ensues. Compromise. Among many other #BernalLessons. Also timely because realizing, after years of believing otherwise, that there is no battle against the cultural establishment so far that has meant actually changing the fundamental crises of / in culture work. The tendency towards cliquishness, the elitism, the focus on (the elitism) of form, the kulto method, all happen even in the alternative spheres, it’s always ever just a matter of time — if it isn’t obvious to begin with. And in the end, the refusal to engage with the establishment, the mainstream, is the death of a discursive exercise that remains necessary and important, especially since by refusing to do battle, what are we allowing but the propagation of the dominant, well-entrenched as that is? Balance. So many lessons learned from having inherited this book and rising to its occasion, but probably the best part is realizing #IshmaelBernal’s intellect and activism, his gayness and humanity, his life lived doing cultural work with eyes wide open, ready to compromise and rebel at every turn.
