An Ode to My Favorite Place in Town
AH, my local cinema. I'd be lost without you. I've whiled away so many afternoons and evenings in your seats. Enjoyed so much tasty popcorn-with and without nutritional yeast. Seen so many fantastic films which blew my mind (and a couple that numbed it). So when a film won't play due to a glitch on a blu-ray/dvd, as it did this afternoon when I went to see The Trip, I won't complain. My friend Claire will, though. She has complained to me in the past that she feels cheated because they often show films (especially foreign fare) on DVD/Blu-Ray rather than actual film. I'm sure it's more cost effective and transfers likely come on the DVD format rather than reels. It's on the big screen, that's what I really care about.
Besides, the seats are comfy. Not as luxurious as the ones at the mall, but they're pretty nice. The popcorn is far and away superior to anything I've ever had at a cineplex concession stand. They never mind if you bring your own drinks or even snacks, although once again, the popcorn is the best in town, hell, in the state. Dare I say the entire northeast! Oh, I dare.
The crowd is often comprised of loners. Cinephiles, taking in a flick to see if it lives up to it's predecessor's previous work. People of all ages with time to kill. I've had so many conversations with people before films, 7 or eight of us, all there alone. But really we're all there together in the dark of the theater, not sure what's going to happen on that screen. Making assumptions based on writes-ups we've read. Trailer's we've seen. Word of mouth from friends. This is a place I go when I need to relax. When I feel like the only cure for whatever ails me is a movie on a big screen. This is where I go and I don't know what I'd do without it.
