I’m gagging because I was browsing artwork today and came across a post where this yaoi artist was airing her hurt feelings over the Orlando shooting at Pulse. She (a cishet woman) went on about how painful it was for her to have to read all the angry things our community was saying about straight people, after the incident. About how she felt bad for being straight because MOGII/LGBTQIA+ people were so upset and were saying hateful things about straights. About how hate is never the answer to hate, and how we shouldn’t turn it into a “we vs. you” issue, and how being mad was the wrong response. About how there are all kinds of straight people out there who are great allies to our community and she’s one of them and she’s just so very hurt and bothered by how we’re being mean to straight people.
Here’s a fucking reality check for you:
There were no other posts, anywhere, with any other messages of support for us or talking about anything as regards the tragedy in Orlando. The only mention of it was her crying about her own precious, straight feelings because somehow us being upset made her a victim.
I don’t know what this lady does in her personal time, but I know what she does with her professional time. If you don’t staunchly, outspokenly support MOGII people as hard as you can—if you don’t understand our issues or make an effort to empathize with our feelings—if, in fact, your sole “contribution” to “allyship” is to engage in the fetishization of us as sexual objects and capitalize on that fetish for your own profit, then you are not a fucking ally, you are a shithead. Using us solely to make yourself money, as a straight person, off of gay art is not alliance, it’s betrayal.
It’s always been a “we vs. you” issue, because cishet people have made it one. You attacked us, vilified us, defamed us first. Our feelings are reactionary, self-defense. Yours are baseless, hollow, and wrong.
Co-opting our struggle to fuel your own tearful sense of entitlement is not allyship, it’s bullshit. People died. There are huge systems in place that grind inexorably toward our deaths, that fuel terrorism and hatred and violence against us, simply because we exist. You, as a straight person, do not suffer from those systems like we do. You are not hurt by them like we are. We are murdered in the streets every day. A hundred people were maimed or murdered by an act of mass violence, and for you to cry and gather your tears up and string them together and flog us with them is not being an ally. It’s being an asshole. If your concern in the aftermath of a mass shooting targeting gay, lesbian, bi, trans, Black, and Latinx people is that we shouldn’t be angry, shouldn’t be scared, shouldn’t be loud because our grief and fury make you feel bad, then you are garbage. Trash. Filth. And you are actively and enthusiastically participating in the social systems that are getting us killed, in the first place. Your entitled, straight tears grease the wheels of our genocide.
Cishet people are not owed the comfort of our silence. When we are hurt, we cry. We bleed. We scream. We will be furious, not quiet, and yes, we will be mad at straight people like you whose only concern is your own hurt feelings, especially when your feelings are hurt because you are prioritizing them over us, making it about yourself instead of sharing our sorrow and rage. When you refuse to engage the tragedy that engulfs us, but instead demand the privilege to be insulted by our reaction to it and to have us salve that imaginary wound rather than address our injuries, you are a piece of shit.
And if you do all of this while pretending to be our ally—if you put yourself first while we are dying on the dance floor and lecture us about how we should coddle you as you sit back, drawing hot dick-on-dick action for a tidy profit and crying to anyone who will listen about what a good friend you are to us—then yes. I do hate you. With all my heart and soul and everything I am, I hate you and I wish for you to come to no good end.
You’re not an ally. You’re a fucking child, throwing a tantrum because suddenly it isn’t about you. Suddenly, there’s blood everywhere and the banana sticker you’ve given yourself for being so wonderful isn’t the center of attention; it doesn’t mean anything, anymore, when the bullets start to fly and you aren’t there because you’re weeping over how everyone’s mad at all the straight people.
And that’s your problem: Not that people literally died, were genuinely, actually killed in a bigoted mass homicide, but that the gays are mad at all the wonderful straight people.
You don’t understand what we deal with, and you don’t want to. You just want us to pat your arm and gaze adoringly into your eyes and thank you, thank you so much for being so good to us! What would we be without straight people like you? How could we possibly get along without you? What a pure and innocent heroine, who must be protected at all costs.
Come fucking talk to me when millions of you are dead and mentally ill and marginalized in society because your parents and grandparents and all the people around you have turned society in a prison where they can watch you rot as you tear your own fingernails out trying to climb to freedom, where you slip down and break against the bottom again and again while they pour shit on you from above and tell you you’re a monster, that you brought this on yourself and it’s divine judgment that you suffer. That you should be ashamed they even let you fucking live.
I’ll give you a shoulder to fucking cry on, you self-absorbed, useless scumheap.
Until then? Until all your sins have been redressed and the systems have been broken and we don’t have to live like criminals in our own skins and minds and souls because our pain offends your precious, tender, cishet heart?
Fuck straight people. And fuck fake “allies” like you, in particular. I hope you choke to death on your own poisonous, privileged tears.
