Dragon Age Asks: Warden + Companions - [ ACCEPTING ]

1. What sort of attachment did your Warden form with Alistair, if any at all? Were they close due to their shared experiences as Grey Wardens?

Oh boy. Well, (thanks to mods) Gren and he were actually in a romance. But outside of that, Gren still found him very charming and fun to be around, for the most part. They certainly had their disagreements, most of them about Ostagar, the wardens and then about Grenwick sparing Loghain. But other than that, Gren was happy to support him in whatever he needed. He helped him find Goldanna, consoled him after it went badly and he under no circumstances would force Alistair onto the throne. Not only because Anora was a fine ruler already, but because Gren absolutely hated Arl Eamon. In my HC, he actually calls Eamon out on how he treats Alistair.

So, to put it simply, He was very close to Alistair and cared about him very much, not because of the wardens, but because of who Alistair was as a person. He had his flaws and his amazing qualities and Gren appreciated them all because they all made Alistair who he was.

1. Had your Warden ever met a Qunari before Sten? What did they expect?

Gren had never met a Qunari before Sten. He’d never had the chance to as he had spent most of his time in Highever castle, except for the occasional trip to Denerim or Redcliffe. When he met Sten, he didn’t really know what to expect, so he just treated him like everyone else unless Sten had a problem with it. He was polite as always and never took offense to any of Sten’s view points, but would always insist on why free will was important if he was asked. They had a rather solid friendship by the end though, despite their differing opinions. They had a mutual respect and Gren took the time to find Sten’s sword as soon as he was told about it. Gren always went out of his way to help all his companions, no matter how much they clashed.

What kind of animals does he likes and does he have any pets, or had any in the past?

      he loves snakes. they fascinate him, and out of all the animals he’s had contact with in the past, snakes are usually the ones that behave more passively or affectionately towards him. he doesn’t consider her a pet, but a large copperhead snake, mae, accompanies him often and spends most of her time coiled around his body beneath his clothes. it wouldn’t be uncommon to open up his tunic and see this five foot long snake poke her head out and look at you.

In what situation was your character the most afraid they’ve ever been?

Well, Samahl lived in the Free Marches for most of his life. He never encountered many darkspawn or anything like that. In his childhood then, it would probably have been the first time he encountered humans. The clan did trade with human cities, and one of them was Kirkwall. Kirkwall is, of course, a young elf mage’s worst nightmare. He took one look at the Gallows and never wanted to go there again. Of course, when his Keeper told him about the city, that didn’t help matters. He had to keep going back though, and he got used to it. The templars left well enough alone as long as he kept his head down.

A far worse experience awaited him when he went into the Fade. He still doesn’t remember a lot of it because he’s repressed the worst. But there is nothing worse, in his mind, than being chased, waiting for slaughter. It was almost hopeless. If it weren’t for the Divine... He doesn’t want to think about what could have happened.

What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

Samahl is trusting and complacent. (Unless, of course, you’re human.) Especially with other elves, he sees the common heritage as something that will make them fast friends. So imagine his surprise when he meets Solas and Sera, who are not fond of the Dalish. He’s really proud of where he comes from, so he feels a sense of betrayal. Of course, that part isn’t a flaw in his relationships, that’s a flaw in his character, if it can be counted as such.

The complacency issue is probably it. He might take it for granted when he is friends with somebody. Of course he values his people; he wouldn’t be friends with them if he didn’t. But sometimes he does stupid things with the idea that he’ll be forgiven. Because they are friends. Like he might insult the Qunari or denounce the Chant of Light, but people care about those things. He knows he’s called Dorian out on Tevinter’s bullshit a lot.

He hasn’t destroyed relationships with it. Yet. It’s still very possible.

What does your character believe will happen to them after they die? Does this belief scare them?

He knows what will happen to his body. He’s pretty sure his spirit will linger for a while in the Fade. After that? He’s not sure anymore. He’s seen too much to be sure of anything anymore. He hopes, though, that the Fade will be more like his dreams of the forests of home rather than the lair of the Nightmare demon.

         “You.” A shem, a mage, a Tevinter mage at that, all rolled into one. And talking to her no less. Rinne could think of better ways to spend her time. Like rolled down a hill in barbed wire. It didn’t help that she was already pissy about something else.

          ❝Good. Then I’ll assume asking a local about a respectable inn in these parts not inappropriate,❞ she drawls in a monotone breath. Her utter disinterest in these ‘warm welcomes’ is only furthered by her exhaustion from travel. ❝Though I suppose I should avoid asking your kind in the future.❞
