What is your view on the idea that each citizen holds a portion of the national debt?

The national debt can be divided into two broad categories: debt held by the public and debt held by government accounts — so-called intragovernmental debt. Right now, public debt is about 74% of our entire economic output (and projected to top 100% within 25 years), while our total debt is currently about 100% of everything we produce. This means that it would take an entire year of production just to pay for everything we currently owe — nevermind keeping some for ourselves!

Although no citizen will have to directly pay their portion of the debt (see an estimate of your share here, if you’re curious: http://1.usa.gov/1u4o7Lc), we all will ultimately have to pay it in one way or another, likely through negative consequences like higher interest rates in the future, hampered economic growth as we’ve seen recently, or even an eventual fiscal crisis, as the Congressional Budget Office has recently warned about.
