Season three of the Tudor-period drama begins in the d ays after Anne Boleyn's (Natalie Dormer) execution. Henry quickly remarries, this time to the noblewoman Jane Seymour (Annabelle Wallis), and continues his quest for a suitable male heir. Henry brutally deals with a Catholic uprising in the country, in reaction to his split from Rome, and later attempts reconciliation with his daughters from previous marriages, Mary and Elizabeth. As the season progresses, Queen Jane gives birth to a male heir, Prince Edward, but ultimately succumbs to postnatal infection. A politically calculated search for a fourth wife for Henry results in an ill-fated match and a loveless marriage. As the season draws to a close, Henry's aggressive and oppressive measures against the Catholic Church have rankled France and Spain, stirring talk of war, a nd affairs of state take a hit when Cromwell (James Frain) is labeled a traitor and dispatched to the Tower of London by the newly empowered Charles Brandon (Henry Cavill).
