Me, calling my dad, who is…curt, at the best of times: Hey daddy, love you how are you, how the fuck do I use an architect ruler? I need to turn my homework in by 4 pm. (It was noon when I asked)
Dad: Send me pictures of the assignment, I’m late for a doctors appointment. *hangs up on me*
Me: *sends pictures, watches a couple YouTube videos and reviews the class material, figures shit out*
Dad, calling me back at about 1 pm, no hello or any pleasantries: Well, I haven’t done this myself since the ‘80s but let’s get to business.
Me: Significant lack of Huns, no can do. I watched YouTube videos and already submitted my quiz. But! How many square feet of concrete is in a column that’s 20 inches, um, diameter and uhhh…and 18 feet tall?
Dad: I hate that I’ve watched that movie with you more than ten times. *blatantly puts me on speakerphone, rattles off the answer to the concrete question while there’s lots of crinkle noises in the background and then says this little gem* Shut up for a sec, my oldest halfwit has a legitimate question. Keep going, sweetie.
Me: I’m good Dad, thank you. I’ll let you get back to it.
Dad: Dammit. Yeah, alright. *hangs up on me*

Crush Lafayette!
Lehigh University's American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter invited all to Fritz lab for a crushing event. A "Lehigh" steel beam crushed a "Lafayette" beam using the 5 million-pound testing machine in Fritz Laboratory.
This is a recent tradition that the civil engineering department and student chapter host each Le-Laf.
In semi-arid regions, under natural conditions, a large fraction of rainfall (~60-70%) soaks into the soil, is absorbed by vegetation and evapotranspires back to the atmosphere. The rest runs off (~20-25%) or recharges groundwater (~5-10%). Groundwater from replenished aquifers seeps into streams through the dry season. Cities fundamentally transform the natural water cycle. As land gets paved and green cover disappears, very little rainwater infiltrates. Evapotranspiration is much lower and almost all the rain ends up as run-off. This is not a problem in itself. Generations of civil engineers have been trained in stormwater design with one objective—to build pipes large enough to transport water from a “50-year storm” (intense rain event that occurs, on average, once in a 50 years) as quickly as possible. Climate change has complicated this by increasing the frequency of such “extreme events”.
