HowDoes CybercrimeImpact the Society

Cybercrime is any criminal behavior connected to computers and the Internet, known as hacking, phishing, spam, or used as a tool to support crimes (child pornography and hate crime) via the Internet. Due to a massive number of people and associated equipment, this is now a more unprecedented risk.Cybercrime is terminology for an illegal activity that uses computers as the primary means.

Cybercriminals may use computers to access personal information, trade secrets, or use the Internet for unlawful or malicious purposes. Criminals can also use computers for communicating and storing documents or data. Besides, Kenneth J Hamer-Hodgeswrites in his book "Civilizing Cyberspace,"there are no rules, locks, and keys in the basement of networked Cyberspace.

How does it impact?

The impact of cybercrime can have far-reaching consequences, including financial loss, intellectual property theft, and loss of consumer confidence and trust. The overall economic impact of cybercrime on society and government is estimated at billions of dollars a year.Criminals use technology in many different ways. In particular, the Internet is an excellent tool for scammers and other criminals because it enables them to cover digital anonymity shields while increasing transaction volume. Cybercrime impacts society in numerous ways and some of them are:

1)      Identity Theft

Being a victim of cybercrime can have a long-term impact on life. Phishing is a common approach used by scammers, that is, sending fake emails claiming to be from banks or other financial institutions and asking for personal information. If a person transfers this information, it can give criminals access to their bank and credit accounts and open new accounts and destroy credit ratings.

2)      Security Costs

Cybercriminals also focus their attacks on businesses large and small. Hackers can try to take over the company's server to steal information or use it for their purposes, requiring the company to hire personnel and update the software to prevent intruders.

A survey of large companies found that the average annual spending on cybersecurity was US $ 8.9 million. 100% of companies surveyed reported having at least one malware incident in the last 12 months, and 71% reported Hacking company computers from cybercriminals.

3)      Financial Losses

The total financial loss caused by cybercrime can be huge. According to one report, 1.5 million people are victims of certain types of cybercrime every day, ranging from simple password theft to widespread money fraud. On average, each victim loses the US $ 197, and global cyber-crime losses exceed the US $ 110 billion each year. As consumers wisely use traditional attack methods, cybercriminals have developed new technologies that include mobile devices and social networks to keep their illegal earnings in circulation.

4)      Piracy

Internet piracy has had a significant impact on the entertainment, music, and software industries. Loss claims are difficult to estimate, or even verify, ranging from hundreds of millions of dollars to billions of dollars each year. In response, copyright owners lobbied for stricter laws to prevent intellectual property theft, leading to legislation such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. These laws allow copyright owners to target file sharers and sue them for large sums of money to make up for economic losses caused by their online activities.

5)      Social Impacts

Cybercriminals take full advantage of the anonymity, confidentiality, and interconnection provided by the Internet, thus attacking our modern information society's foundation. Cybercrime can include botnets, computer viruses, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, cyber-terrorism, cyber-pornography, denial of service attacks, hacking, identity theft, malware, and spam. Law enforcement officials have been trying to keep up with cybercriminals' speed, which is causing billions of dollars in damage to our global economy every year.Police are trying to use the same tools that cybercriminals use to commit crimes to prevent these crimes and bring the guilty parties to justice.

In conclusion, cybercrime does get the recognition it deserves. However, this is not going to stop that quickly. In fact, cybercriminals are likely to continue to develop and escalate to maintain legal leadership. So, to make us safer, we must ensure cybersecurity. As someone rightly said: "Bytes replace bullets in the criminal world."
