The Connection between Factory Farming and New Diseases

Extracts from a letter this month from campaigning charity CIWF (Compassion in World Farming on www.ciwf.org.uk ) :

“It has been a tough year and lockdown has been hard for many.  As we come to the last few months of 2020, we inevitably reflect on the impact COVID-19 has had on day-to-day life, including restrictions on our movements and freedom.  These limitations are a never-ending reality for animals suffering in factory farms.”

“COVID-19 has shown that diseases can easily jump to humans from animals.  According to the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, three out of every four new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals.  Cramming large numbers of animals together creates a breeding ground for disease.  Treating farm animals with compassion isn’t just critically important to their wellbeing.  It is crucial to our health.”

UK Reporting of US Food Standards

Be very careful about the objectivity of some UK commentators on this subject.  They include those who will never accept Brexit and hence seek to discredit any US/UK trade deal by condemning all US food production as unsafe.  They have even misled many who happily buy chlorine washed European vegetables to object to chlorine washing in principle (please see the post “Washing Chicken in Chlorine Solution” of 30/10/2020).

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) has no such agenda and those who make these blanket condemnations should read some good news from the US.  Page 4 of the Winter 2020 edition of CIWF’s Farm Animal Voice magazine says:

“Cage Free Colorado: In July, Colorado became the seventh US state to ban the use of cages for hens.

The law, which will come into force in 2023, also sets minimum standards for cage free farming and bans the sale of all whole eggs from caged systems - whether sourced in Colorado or not.

With almost 5.5 million egg-laying hens housed on Colorado farms and millions more out-of-state birds providing eggs for Colorado’s shops, this legislation is set to have major, meaningful implications for farm animals across the country.”

Washing Chicken in Chlorine Solution

This is an American practice which is banned in the EU and hence the UK.  There has been repeated condemnation by people opposing Brexit seeking to discredit a possible UK/US trade deal.  I do not claim expertise in US food production techniques, but wonder how much is genuine concern for food standards and how much is anti Brexit rhetoric.

For a politically neutral viewpoint, I turned to Compassion in World Farming and a relevant article by them can be found by clicking on https://www.ciwf.org.uk/media/press-releases/2020/06/uk-retailers-must-decide-whether-they-will-protect-consumers-from-a-host-of-potential-threats-to-uk-food-standards-in-trade-deals-with-the-usa .  They list six concerns about a trade deal with the US.  The fourth is “the import of chicken washed in chlorine ... used to mask dirty conditions in production, slaughter and processing ...”.  Please note that there is no criticism of the chlorine washing itself, only of the conditions of food production etc.

In the UK (and EU), some of our vegetables are pre-washed in the self same chlorine solution.  You can identify them by the words “pre-washed” and there being a “use by” date instead of a “best before” date.  If the process was harmful, food producers would not be allowed to use it.  However, if you disagree with this and my interpretation of Compassion in World Farming’s article, you should stop buying pre-washed vegetables immediately.

I would welcome an American response to this post.  Are your food production, slaughter and processing methods satisfactory?  If not, does chlorine washing overcome the problem? Do you agree that there is nothing wrong with chlorine washing in itself?

New Trade Deals: A Warning from Compassion in World Farming

It’s not making today’s headlines, but the transitional agreement between the EU and UK is due to finish at the end of this year and hopefully be replaced by a large number of beneficial trade deals across the world.  Here are two extracts from a letter from campaigning charity Compassion in World Farming.

“I am writing to you today about an urgent, critical issue facing farm animals in the UK.  Right now, Britain’s leaders are deep in trade negotiations with many of the world’s nations.  These deals will bind the fate of billions of farm animals for decades to come.  Will these animals be Brexit winners or sacrificial pawns in an economic game?

Sacrificing farm animal welfare is too high a price for any ‘deal’.  A gift from you today will help fight factory farming in the UK, at our borders, and beyond.”

“Our leaders don’t negotiate new trade deals and write new laws every day.  It may be decades before there is another chance like this to transform the future of our food.  We must not miss this unique opportunity to speak up for farm animals and hold our leaders to their promises.”
