Different Than Before

Though my eyes feel like they’re going to burn right out of my sockets, I can’t help but to keep staring over at my genius brother. The stupid-looking helmet is still strapped on his head, but I don’t have the heart to remove it. I don’t want to touch him.

Not when he’s like this…

It’s been several hours since the “transfer,” as Donnie kept calling it, and still, nothing’s changed on the charging unit or the computer screen. And so, I just keep watching and waiting for something – ANYTHING – to happen.

Did Donnie even say how long this would take? Maybe he did. I can’t remember.

Why the shell can’t I remember?

I clutch my head in my trembling hands, desperately trying to alleviate the pounding in my skull. It’s nothing compared to the ache in my chest as I gaze at my brother’s lifeless body.

Reality still hasn’t fully sunk in yet.

The fact that my brother is dead…

Missed Opportunities

In the history of rotten days, this had to be one of the worst. Hamato Donatello breathed out a sullen sigh that no one could actually hear. Unlike him, the rest of his family was probably fast asleep by now, but he just could not seem to settle into a comfortable position. This was not for lack of trying. He had spent the lion’s share of the past hour shifting in his bed, vainly attempting to find peace, but alas, comfort was not meant to be. Maybe that’s because he had been beaten to a pulp not all that long ago.

Everything hurt.

Whether he laid on his side, his front, or his back, the pain would radiate throughout his body. A harsh, relentless reminder of what had happened that night.

That awful, awful night.

Pushing himself up into a sitting position, Donatello wearily gazed out at the shadows enveloping his room. Something about the darkness sent a chill creeping up and down his spine.

It was so menacing.

So very sinister.

So eerily reminiscent.

A whimper threatened to escape the confines of his parched throat as a flood of memories came rushing back without mercy. Disturbing memories he’d just as soon forget...

“What’s it say, dude?” My kid brother’s bloodshot eyes about double in size as he asks this question, clearly hanging on my every word.

I stare down at the delicate device in my hand, unable to stop a worried expression from crossing my face.

“One hundred point two.”

“A hundred point two? Holy chalupa! Am I gonna die?” The obvious panic monopolizing my younger sibling’s voice is both unsettling and amusing at the same time. He can be so overly dramatic. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill…

Still, I can’t blame him for being paranoid. These are terrifying times...

A Matter of Perspective

Okay, in all likelihood, we’re not going to survive the night, so I want to state, for the record, this is totally my hotheaded brother’s fault. I would also like to point out that the words ‘I told you so’ should be carved into my tombstone, in great big, bold letters for all to see. Raphael’s tombstone, on the other hand, should just have the word ‘meathead’ inscribed across it. A fitting tribute to the idiot brother who just got us both killed.

That’s right!

Killed!

I can’t believe this is it…

After all those death-defying missions fighting off alien robots and homicidal ninja warriors, this is how it’s all going to end? At the hands of two utterly incompetent buffoons.

It’s humiliating.

Really, really humiliating.

Now, you’re probably asking yourself, ‘How did they get into this mess in the first place?’

Good question.

That’s What Brothers Are For

For the third day in a row, the screechy sound of a rooster crowing is trying to pull me out of my slumber way, way too early for my liking. I let out a groan and crack my eyelids open just a sliver, only to be blinded by the sunlight pouring in through the window. Something I never had to worry about back in the sewers.

It makes me realize just how much I miss the lair. . .

Yanking my covers up over my head, I attempt to go back to sleep. Not that I really need more sleep. After being in a coma for three months, I should be plenty rested. Yet, I feel as though I’m a walking zombie. Well, maybe a crippled zombie would be more accurate. I still can’t actually get around without the aid of a crutch.

My eyes drift towards the wooden stick leaned up against the footboard of my bed. Just seeing that dumb crutch makes my chest tighten with dread. I can’t help but wonder if my injuries are ever going to fully heal. What good is a ninja who can’t –

I stop myself mid-thought before I get too caught up in self-pity, again, reminding myself that I only regained consciousness a little over a week ago.

I can just hear Master Splinter’s voice telling me, ‘You must be patient, my son.’

The memory of my father causes my breathing to become ragged, like my throat is suddenly closing up on me.

In a matter of a few hours, my brothers and I lost nearly everything. Our home, our city, our father…
