Meet the Family - Clayton Keller

As our flight landed in San Jose I was getting super nervous again. When Clayton had asked if I wanted to come with him for the all star game I had said yes in an instant. Then he told me his family was coming too, I tired to back out but he had already told them I was coming too. Since then I had tried to come up with excuses to not go on the mini vacation but he saw right through all of them. Even though we have been dating for over a year, I still hadn’t met his family. I had met Clayton last year during his rookie season when he came into the salon to get his hair cut, I was the only person free so I did it. He came back the next day to ask me out and I said yes, we had been dating ever since.

“Ally, you need to relax. I want my family to meet you, I know they are going to love you.”

“What if they think that I’m just with you because you are a hockey player? I’m just a hairdresser, I didn’t even go college.” I grabbed my bag out of the overhead bin as there was some open space to move on the plane so I gathered my stuff and moved off the plane with Clayton right behind me. Clayton took my hand once we were in the airport terminal and moved us off to the side.

“You aren’t just a hairdresser, people came from super far away for you to color their hair. You even went to that conference in Florida over the summer that you had to be invited to. College isn’t for everyone, I never went.” I wouldn’t look him in the eye so he cupped my cheek and lifted my face so I had no choice but to look at him. “I am proud of you every day and I’m glad that I walked into the random place to get my haircut, because I met you.”

“I’m just nervous.”

“I know, but you don’t need to be. My family knows all about you and they know that I love you. My brother teases me all the time because he says I get these ‘mushy heart eyes’ when I talk about you. Please don’t worry about this, let’s go to the hotel and check in. I told my family we were going to meet them for dinner tonight, I made reservations for an Italian place that we like to go when we are out here for games. They have a really good seafood pasta that I know you will like.” I nod and relax as Clayton kisses my forehead. Walking through the airport I tried to calm my heartbeat and it worked until our Uber pulled up to the hotel and Clayton swore under his breath. “So my family is standing right there, I told them to give us time to settle in but that apparently isn’t going to happen. Sorry.”

“Might as well do this now.” I got out of the car and started to get other bags out of the trunk while Clayton was being hugged by his mom.

“Wow Clayton, making your girlfriend do the heavy lifting? Guess being an all star has gone to your head.” Clayton shoved his brother, who I recognize from pictures before his mom stopped them.

“Really boys?” Clayton finally stopped as I got the last bag out of the trunk and handed it to the hotel employee that had come out. “You must be Ally, I’m so glad we could finally meet.” She pulled me into a hug and I was shocked, but I could see Clayton smiling at me over her shoulder.

“Sorry I couldn’t come with Clayton over the summer to visit, that is one of my busiest times of the year. Everyone wants fun, colorful hair for the summer.” It was true I barely got one day off a week for the entire summer, Clayton wanted me to come for a little bit of time but the money was too good to pass up when I wanted to eventually wanted to own my own business.

“Don’t worry about it hun, I’m just so glad we are meeting now. I’m sorry that we ambushed you too, I was just too excited.”

“Mom, we just got off a flight so I’m sure Ally wants to go freshen up and relax for a little bit before we have dinner. Can we go up to our room now?”

“Of course honey, I just missed you so much. I couldn’t wait.”

“It’s fine mom, I know I’m tired and Ally had a last minute client at 6 this morning. So we need to rest.” His mom nods and gives both of us a hug before we go check in and head up to our room. It was a beautiful suite that had amazing views of downtown. “That wasn’t too bad, right?”

“No, I’m still a little nervous for dinner but your mom is really nice.”

“Good, now come nap with me for an hour before we have to start to get ready for dinner. Because starting tomorrow I have to do stuff for the all star game and I won’t get to cuddle you as much as I want to.” I kicked off my sandals before curling up in the large, plush bed with Clayton, resting my head on his chest. I fell asleep quickly the last minute coloring and the stress of meeting his family had me drained.

I woke up first and moved to the bathroom, enjoying the shower as I cleaned off the stale air of the plane. I wrapped a towel around me just as Clayton stepped into the bathroom. “No showering together?”

“No, I can’t talk to your mom while I keep thinking about how we were in the shower together an hour before hand. Go shower, I’m gonna get ready.” I pulled on a sundress and started to curl my hair, I really like how my hair was colored right now. It was my natural light brown up top and then became bluer as it reached the tips. Clayton had assured me I didn’t need to change it back to a completely natural color. When Clayton did step out of the bathroom I couldn’t take my eyes off of him, he stepped out into the main area of our room completely naked.

“Like what you see?”

“You are a troublemaker. I saw a Starbucks in the lobby, I need caffeine so I’m gonna go get coffee while you put on clothes.”

“You are no fun.” Grabbing my purse I head downstairs and order my iced coffee before finding a seat in the lobby.

“Hey Ally.” I looked up to see Clayton’s younger brother walking towards me.

“Jake, right?”

“Yeah, Clayton still beautifying himself?”

“He was almost done but I needed coffee so I came down early. Where are your parents?”

“They were going to get Clayton.” He looks at me before speaking again. “You know he is crazy in love with you, right?”

“I feel the same way about him, he is my favorite person in the world.”

“And she is mine.” I turn around to see Clayton and his parents standing behind us. “Best haircut I ever got.” I smile at the memory as his mom sighs.

“Who knew you are a romantic like your father?” Both sons grown as they kiss and I just laugh, I think that I would get along with Clayton’s family just fine.
