'MEDUSA: THE METAMORPHOSIS', Claire Milner

Part of the artists latest and ongoing collection of oil paintings ‘Allegories of Identity’ is inspired by fashion as a means of expressing identity and individuality. The paintings revisit themes from art history and mythology (Mnemosyne, Artemis, Ara Pacis etc). The subjects are a combination of statuary and world citizen, free of racial or defining features and the compositions reflect and set the mood for the couture in the manner of a film set. The paintings have art historical antecedents, and include allusions to artists such as Modigliani, De Lempicka, Bernini, Longhi, Picasso and Rousseau as well as drawing on the artists' experience in the advertising and design industry and study of Roman and Byzantine mosaics.

'Contemplating Clara: Exhibition of a Rhinoceros at Venice' (After Longhi), Claire Milner

Pietro Longhi's 'Exhibition of a Rhinoceros at Venice' records a historical event, the exhibition in Europe for the carnival of 1751 of a rhinoceros called Clara who had been brought to Europe ten years previously. This reimagined version forms part of a new collection of incongruous images of animals out of place as an allegorical reference to the damaging effects of humans on other species through commodification, poaching, habitat loss and climate change.

'ARTEMIS: PREDATORY MANOEUVRES', Claire Milner

From the 'ALLEGORIES OF IDENTITY' series: The artist's latest collection of oil paintings delve into the subjects of identity, individuality and values, utilising layers and incorporating recurring elements such as architecture and animals, examining fashion as a means of expression, and revisiting themes from art history and mythology (Mnemosyne, Artemis, Ara Pacis etc). The female subjects are a combination of statuary and world citizen, free of racial or defining features, looking to the future with a mischievous nod to the past in calling attention to the subjectivity of women in the canon of art history. These works also incorporate wider philosophies such as migration, displacement, climate change, conservation and the environment, a recurring theme in the artist’s oeuvre.
