Kalestryx is from Clan Wraithgloom, a Shadow clan whose open secret is their cult-like sacrifices of randomly selected members. She's currently training under the Paragons and has taken great pains to distance herself from her birth clan. Feeling no loyalty to her mother or the cult she hails from, she puts a LOT of effort into her appearance and how she carries herself, doing her best to be an upright, honorable example of overcoming the circumstances of her birth.

Unfortunately for her, the magic she manifests is sinister and volatile, inherited from her mother's blood oath to the Shadowbinder. The Archmage is keeping a careful eye on her, hoping to get her gifts under control before she accidentally hurts someone. Despite how hard Kalestryx tries to be a friendly, approachable mage, her clanmates are largely wary of her, and she has few friends outside the Paragons.
