LEA BERTUCCI – Axis/Atlas cassette (Clandestine Compositions)

There’s something fascinating about music that’s calmly busy – music where there’s a ton going on and things change constantly, yet the sum effect is one of patience and peace. There’s nothing rushed or nervous about music like this; the core has a stasis that withstands – even contributes to – all the activity around it. Lea Bertucci’s work is like that. It’s always busy yet always calm, always stable yet never sitting still (and never anywhere close to boring).

Of the records I’ve heard by her, Axis/Atlas puts me in the calmest, quietest mood. Skip through each of these three sculpted, careful pieces and you’ll hear a variety of sounds and turns that make it seem like there’s nothing she didn’t try. But play it start to finish and it becomes a massive meditation, an attempt to slow the universe down by containing it. Not that this is passive music; in fact there are moments of clear aggression that ripple into other quieter segments, giving all of Axis/Atlas a prodding aura. It’s not aggression through confrontation, but aggression through plain action – the kind of musical action Bertucci has so mastered it sounds like she invented it.

LEA BERTUCCI on Axis/Atlas

The sounds on Axis/Atlas represent the accumulation of a year’s worth of tape collages and experiments. Making collages is an ongoing part of my practice that fits into the downtime between larger sound design or compositional projects. Lately, I’ve been exploring multichannel composition with creatively installed speaker arrays and acoustic instruments. The nature of that type of work is more long term and large scale, and I’ve found that continuously making collages is a great way to work out structural ideas and cultivate compositional tactics which I can then apply in those other areas.

In my compositions for tape, juxtapositions of environmental sources and manipulated instruments/objects form an ominous sound-world, where states of alienation, ambiguity and transcendence are examined. The deceleration of tape speed extends the moment of a recorded sound, allowing it to take on its own life as a musically descriptive force.

The first track on Axis/Atlas began as an earworm - a melody I could not get out of my head from the Bulgarian folk song “Dragano Draganke”. It has this amazing flute line with such fluidity, which is then punctuated by a refrain of old women singing. I thought it would be interesting to creatively describe the process of trying to forget the melody. Reel-to-reel tape and washes of microcassette noise shape a tapestry of layered and speed-shifted flute sounds.

I consider my approach to reconfiguring musical forms an act of protest against polite music. My pieces demand an expanded form of listening, openness to forms and textures that seldom appear in the traditional. I seek to push my audiences to their thresholds, to question their own aesthetics, to understand alternative forms of communication. My music is against complacency. The experience of listening to extremely fragile, quiet sounds, or to extremely dense, loud sounds can facilitate a shift of consciousness, an opening to the “other”.
