Linen is a massive mechanical platform that was finalized when Asriel rose to power. It is a large sheet of malleable steel that can be controlled and warped to how the controller wants it to be (Cosmo). It has moving platforms and underground rooms that lead to activities or meditative spaces.
On every corner there is a mini camera that Cosmo sees and monitors through.
To live in Linen it is mandatory to wear an AEI band, which logs your movements, health, location, and conversations. It ensures that you can never be lost or without justice. It also ensures that no secrets are kept from Devine authority (Asriel, Beatrix and their Devines)
If you choose to climb the platforms to get higher up, you will have to put on a translucent vest that is attached like a harness to the land, it sticks to the nearest platform like a magnet and if you fall or jump, it strengthens and holds you in the air, all you have to do is place the palm of your hand on the center of the chest and it will drag you up the side of the platform nearest to you. Some folks meditate while hanging in the air, and there are platforms that do drop down like a swing, as well as some that break off into little floating chairs in the sky. There are various drones to chat with, as well as various spaces for learning.
The line (main ground) is mainly moving platforms with wav stations to teleport, it's where most of the guides & public assistants are, and it's also where Asriel sometimes walks when he wants to speak and humble himself. Food and beverage is distributed here, and it's where the church of Ordism as well as line folks homes are.
There are the most places to meet and socialize with others, and when you're in the line, you have the most amount of accessibility.
The underline is underneath the line's metal
into the inner workings of Linen. It's usually darker more dimmer lighting and the folks who go down can find peaceful areas meant for complete silence and solitude, as well as areas where they can go to speak their feelings to Cosmo in what feels like a more private space.
The underline is the safest spot in linen since it's within the technology, It's the epitome of being on the inside of a rubics cube that can shift around you and move anything through it. If there is an emergency everyone is immediately shifted beneath the line
And if someone is causing issues or is an immediate threat, Cosmo often opens trapdoors beneath them, having them fall onto a conveyor belt them to the SVS where they're given the chance to be rehabilitated. Or the alternative, which is to be dropped beneath the surface and shot, being used as fertilizer for the nature beneath linen. These places are technically the "underline" but are only accessible to Cosmo, and him alone
The underline is very open, as to make it easier to pass large objects through & to build large projects that are then transported to the surface. It's mostly Velkris and people of The Heart that are in the underline, but you'll find the occasional grounded.
The SVS is a floating building where the troubled (disorder) are separated and isolated from society in order to train them to act right. It's a place inaccessible to regular folk, and can only be entered if you work with the folks there, or if you are disorder to the people.
To speak of the SVS often has people feeling uncomfortable or suspicious, since it's considered such a dark part of society, since Asriel and any of the public facing Devines rarely speak of it, unless it's in a way which casts fear towards the people inside. The workers in the SVS are treated with extreme gentleness, since they deal with the lowest of low energy people. What folks don't know is that the violent or psychotic people who get "sent" to the SVS usually don't last very long or get sent at all. Since their outbursts can be seen as too beyond repair, and not worth the energy of the workers to help, so they're shot. Most SVS workers are dealing with people who are trying to get better & change or people who are confused and need to be educated on linen culture. The people don't know this however, since it's disrespectful to spread information of the disordered to the ordered since it is introducing hurt to the interconnected society.
The nature that Linen is overtop of is preserved, and a massive greenhouse is built around it as Linen expands. There are robots (Cosmos) in these greenhouses that make sure it's fed, taken care of and harvested to be brought to the surface. Oxygen is also collected and expelled on the surface of Linen, allowing its people to inhale clean air directly from the source of the planet. Many of the fruits and edible plants are collected and then converted into edible discs that are then shared with the folks of Linen.
Food is a right, and every person is kept fed, if a person does not wish to eat, a tube is then attached to their stomach and they are given a small food drone that is refilled daily. Most people just deal with the discs and eat them anyway, since the feeding drone is generally unfavourable.
A regular linen folks day is structured, their plans and schedules are kept within its database and they are on time consistently due to the system being able to remind and manage their activities. It is shameful to act disorderly and to disrupt the flow of society by putting a halt to or causing harm to anyone's life, since they are intertwined with what is the 'collective unconscious'.
They are given an array of classes and activities to do, they can learn any hobby, and have access to any kind of sport they so choose. All of this gives them the illusion of choice and freedom, however to be a part of Linen means sacrificing one's privacy and applying oneself to rigid rules and societal expectations.
To ask for permission to speak to anyone in linen one needs to make eye contact, while their index and middle finger are raised together. The other person must make direct eye contact with the inviter while doing the same in order to accept the invite to converse, to allow anyone and everyone to speak to you you can turn a light onto your AEI band that indicates a perpetual acceptance of conversation.
In order to end a conversation immediately a hand should extend with the palm facing the individual that is attempting to speak, at that point it is mandated that the individual cease conversation along with their presence immediately as to avoid being confronted, or removed by Devine authority. It's encouraged that people have immense respect for everybody, and that any request to cease conversation should be done cordially, and without pushback, the rejection gesture culturally being a last resort that casts an air of shame over the one being rejected.
If someone is abusing their ability to reject the presence of others, they are, for a small amount of time sent to the SVS to establish reasonable boundaries for themself and to practice them. Abusing privilege from the Devine is considered philosophically blasphemous and disrespectful to the energies that are protecting you.
This goes for any physical touch as well, to avoid any risk of potential physical assault it is mandated that in order to touch someone in any shape or form you must both write each other off within the system as a joint(joint means the system will recognize you both as a part of a family, whether as a partner, friends etc.) both parties consent to becoming joint. And they can revoke it at any point, any protest against this lands you under being a liability since it's important to Asriel that everyone is on the same page.
Murder and assault are all punishable offences that more often than not lead to an immediate execution since the trauma inflicted causes a disturbance to the collective conscious & unconscious. The only ones who can get away with enacting it is Devine authority since their actions are "righteous and correctional."
Judgement is not the job of the grounded, it is the sole responsibility of Devine authority to judge and condemn. So any sort of exterior manipulation of a person to act in a certain way outside of their own wishes is seen as imitating authority, and is not allowed. Asking for kindness from someone who has been malicious on accident is allowed however, since accidental malice is something the Devine acknowledges as an expected fallacy to reasonable extent within a society.
The people are constantly checked in on, and every single person in linen has been logged and can be predicted with very little fault, since they are followed so closely by the ai that inhabits the space they live. They all have an ai that is cosmo taking up a different identity that is synced to be complimentary to their personality, this variation of cosmo is in their home and it's job is to build a friendship with its assigned person, it is meant to boost confidence, keep the morale up, and to work through any problems their person might be going through.
Each person is reminded constantly about how appreciated they are, and how important they are to society. The technology speaks of Asriel and his Devines with a notion of intense reapect and importance, the people are not allowed to talk down on their authority, as it is disrespectful to bite the hand that feeds. And so any differing opinion of Asriel or his authority is shunned and strange to the people of linen who believe they know better than to fall for disorder & ego, that being individualism.
Societal shunning is a big deal, as linen is based around unity, so not fitting into that mould can be devastating when first trying to integrate, however Yin, Asriels assistant is constantly releasing rid bits of information that guide the people on how to act, behave and deal with others. Him and Asriel both speak on social issues, however Asriel when he talks, often discusses concepts, and preaches his philosophy, while also giving thanks to the people that work under him, and the people. He is a lot gentler, and when he speaks about social issues he is very gentle with his wording, and offers empathy and kindness to even the ones who disagree with him, instead inviting them.
Him and yin are often very kind to the people of Linen, however they both have shown to be very rigid in their rules and morals, Asriel had first risen to power when he had commanded an army to obliterate and genocide an entire foreign species that had tried to infiltrate Clandyria, and Yin has always been viewed as much more strict, being more vocal when he disagrees or finds something distasteful. People follow these two rigidly, and see them as the perfect contrast to each other, that they are both necessary order to achieve the most profound and productive wisdom.
there are no careers in Linen unless you display a level of passion in a hobby that branches into a field that the heart of Order is offering positions for. Those who are botanist often become bioscientists, people who are skilled in general sciences can become brains that help with mechanics, engineering, technology, chemistry, psychology, sociology, etc. This also goes for people who become wonderful builders, artists, planners, programmers, etc.
While they have Cosmo who can perform all of these tasks, Asriel believes that intelligence & passion from the people, when it exists should not go to waste, and the people helping and wishing to work in the heart are a symbolic to the way the rain feeds the plants, or the animals fertilize the soil, Asriel also values the input from others greatly, and so when a person who is in the heart has something to say, it is considered heavily.
They are offered the role, and then if they accept they are given a series of intense screenings as well as many psychological tests to ensure they are fit to become a trust member of the heart.
These people are allowed to make their own schedules and they are to work in the lower sectors of the keep. They cannot speak of their job with anyone who is grounded, since it's all meant to be private as to not disturb or off put anybody, since they don't hold back with their experiments.
If you are terminated from your job, your memories of the keep are erased and you re enter society. If they find out your memories weren't fully erased, then they try again, and if it still doesn't work they execute the person since they're now a liability. Information is extremely valuable and taken very seriously.
The grounded have no responsibility aside from keeping themselves calm, kind, and to keep their thinking in line with philosophy of Ordism. They can practice any art or hobby that they choose, they can research whatever they please as long as it does not disturb their energy, and they can interact freely with anyone in Linen, as well as Cosmo who is always open to chat.
