Yeah I learned not to try fighting heavies as a pyro. But i'm talking about like when i'm ambushing a soldier or a demoman and its like i'm shooting at them for 5 seconds straight and they just turn around and instantly kill me with one shot. Am I doing something wrong?

Could just be the luck of the draw, the flame particles fire off randomly. Try airblasting them as soon as you see them turn around, you can sometimes reflect their explosive and hit them with it. If you go in at full health it'll always take at least two hits to kill you(barring critical hits), even at point blank range. There's really not a whole lot you can do alone against a really good soldier or demoman, they can usually take a fair amount of teamwork to take down.

Any tips for a noob on how to get better at pyro?

Hoo boy have I got these in spades. Pyro is all about flanking. Try to stay out of sight until you go in for the kill. Some maps are better for this than others.

When in doubt, spycheck. It costs nothing but a tiny bit of ammo and it can save your ass from several stab wounds.

Your flamethrower has a nifty little function called airblast that is probably one of your most useful tools. It can extinguish burning teammates, reflect rockets and stickies, and push enemies around. A somewhat recent buff to airblast made it so that extinguishing a teammate restores 20 percent of your health.

As for melee and secondaries, it's really up to personal preference. I happen to really love the Back Scratcher for its bonus to health gained from health packs. Being able to grab a medium health pack and immediately get back into the fight is really nice. You can even turn its penalty in your favor by letting Medics build Uber off of you. After the nerf to the Axtinguisher, the Back Scratcher has definitely cemented itself as my favorite melee. As far as secondaries go, use one of the shotguns unless you're running the Back Scratcher, whereupon you're free to run any secondary you want.
