@clanofd asked - paulie looks down at the woman who's presented herself to him for scrutiny. okay, that's a bit harsh, it's a job interview, but still. he's the vice president of galley-la now, he has to take his job seriously, and that means doing a good job, vetting the shipwrights who present themselves to be hired. he squints again at his clipboard, then looks at the woman again. "so, ms. … mel? sorry, i only have that name here. what should i call you?" he grunts the words out, not meaning to be serious or stern, just trying to be professional. unfortunately, professional for paulie means very little. he even has to get help with his tie, still trying to remember how to tie the thing. you'd think it's as easy as a rope, but nope. but maybe he's coming off a bit…too gruff? "sorry, i'm new at this- to being vice-president, i mean. i used to be a foreman on dock 1, but got promoted recently. but i'm not trying to scare you off, i promise." he rubs his neck sheepishly with his free hand, feeling his cheeks redden a bit from embarrassment. "anyway, how long you've been a shipwright? or are you looking for more of an apprentice position? we can teach you the ropes, if you want, but those positions don't pay. do well, though and you'll be on your way to being a real shipwright in no time." (sorry this took so long! let me know if there's any issues, but i'm excited to write with you!)
“Mel or Melody is fine,” she answers, not offering up her last name. It isn’t important and if she absolutely has to give one she has a fake on ready.
“It’s okay,” she smiles easily, glad that he seems distracted with trying to figure out his own job. It means he won’t look too closely at her. She is sure this job will be like all the rest, short lived and just a way to stack cash until she needs to run again, but she always hopes to find something permanent. Maybe Water 7 will be the home she’s been looking for.
“Well… I mean I grew up at sea so I know my way around a ship,” she explains with a sheepish smile, playing at being shy and uncertain. “So… I mean I guess an apprenticeship then?” She has some savings she can live off in the meantime, but it would be tight. “I’m a fast learner,” she adds, clearly eager for the chance to learn.
