Can kids get away with singing these songs anymore?
I just remembered some very violent songs that ordinary kids used to sing on the schoolbus. Sometimes they’d get in trouble, but most of the time it was just a half-hearted chastistement from the bus driver, at worst.
The two I remember went like this:
[To the tune of “heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s off to work we go” from Snow White.)
Heigh ho, heigh ho, it’s off to school we go With hand grenades and razor blades Heigh ho, heigh ho, heigh ho heigh ho heigh ho
Heigh ho, heigh ho, its home from school we go With blown-up butts and razor cuts Heigh ho, heigh ho, heigh ho heigh ho heigh ho
(To the tune of the Christmas carol, “Joy to the World”]
Joy to the world, the teacher’s dead We barbecued her head What happened to the body? We flushed it down the potty! And round and round it goes And round and round it goes And round and round and round it goes
So… yeah. I wasn’t all that fond of those songs as a kid. They just made me kind of queasy, like a lot of pointlessly violent imagery did. But none of the kids who sang them were any worse or more violent than any of the kids that didn’t. And I can just picture this not going over well in the post-Columbine, post-9-11, prison-happy “zero tolerance” school systems. The kids singing this were young too,
I’m glad I don’t have to go to school these days. And I’m. kind of glad I’m not having to deal with all the difficult decisions involving a school-age child. (My inclination would be to unschool them – or something similar, with or without a catch name. But that might also count against me, given that if I did by some miracle manage to survive pregnancy, it would take another miracle to be allowed to keep the child given that I’m known to have developmental disabilities and I’m poor. So I’m sure my every move would be under scrutiny, and unschooling is not a thing such people would comprehend. But given the way schooling works, especially these days, the only way I’d send my kids to school is if they begged, and I’d have a rapid exit strategy in case things went bad, which I’m sure they would.
Anyway I’ve noticed that schoolyard songs, clapping games, jump-rope chants, etc. often seem to be a way kids deal with taboo topics – sex, violence, etc. But I have a feeling this particular kind of song might not be allowed anymore. Can anyone who’s been to school since these events, let me know whether songs like this still exist, and if not, what happens to people who try? I just have a terrible feeling about this, considering how many cops are in schools, zero tolerance policies, etc. I just bet someone would decide anyone singing these was potentially dangerous. :-/

I think I may just like any song with clapping in it
