We'll Keep Waiting For You
Summery: When Clare finally gets to Skype with K.C. who has been away at war for 11 months.
Since they knew that it was one of the last times that they would all be together. The group of friends all went to their senior prom together. The night was how everyone pictures their prom, cheesy decoration, laughter and a lot of dancing like fools. It was the last slow song of the night when K.C. asked her to dance with him. While they were dancing, K.C. lifted her chin so Clare was looking at him. He whispered that he loved her and kissed her.Afterwards they made it official, both happy to have the other back. Seven months later K.C. enlisted into the Army. He gave her no real reason why he was going to. It wasn’t ideal for her to see him do this but it was what he wanted. So Clare supported his decision in doing so.
Back in her room, Clare’s heart rate picked up when she saw the call button. Her fingers fumbled on the keys to press accept. As soon as she saw the handsome boy in uniform, a smile formed on her face. It had been so long since the last time they got to Skype.Clare felt the tears in her eyes as he smiled back her and she heard his voice softly say. “Hi baby.”Just hearing the sound of his voice took her over the edge and the tears started flowing down her face. “No, Clare don’t cry. I need to see that beautiful smile.”
Through she let the tears continue to fall she tried her best to smile at him. “I’m just so happy to see you, K.C. It’s been way to long since I’ve seen that smile.” Her eyes scanned all that she could see. When she reached his head she pouted. K.C. with short hair was very weird for her still, Clare missed his long shaggy hair.
He smirked at her and nodded. “This isn’t easy for me either Clare but I’d much rather see you smiling since I can kiss your tears away.”Clare knew that K.C. wasn’t going to cry. He has changed so much; the army has toughened him up and she didn’t know if she liked it or not.
Clare brushed the last of her tears away and said. “You’re okay? You’ve been getting my letters?”
“I’m fine. I look fine don’t I?” He paused for a moment and she could see the sadness on his face. “Yes, I have and those pictures… they kill me knowing I can’t witness it myself.”
All she wanted to do was wrap her arms around him and make all this pain go away. Clare really just wanted her boyfriend to arrive home. She turned around when she heard the whimpering. When she looked back at the screen she was crying again. “Their is someone I want you to meet.”
The young curly haired girl got up from her seat and walked over to the crib that was now placed in her room. While she walked there the night before K.C. had to leave flooded her thoughts.
Clare squealed as K.C. caught her and spun her around. She knew right away that running from him would be a mistake on her part. The girl smiled up at her boyfriend sheepishly, wanting to pretend to be innocent. “Don’t think that you can give me that look at everything will be forgotten.” He said with a slight frown that Clare wanted to kiss away.
Clare doesn’t even remember what she did to have him chase her nor did she like how he was pretending to be mad. “But K.C., I’m smart we all know that. I’m good at getting out of trouble.” She laughed as she tried to squirm out of his arms. His arms shifted around her and soon she was being carried off to his room. Clare squealed again as she was tossed on his bed and laughed as he hovered over her. She closed her eyes as he got closer to her and smiled when she felt his lips brush softly against his. Her eyes opened when she felt him move away from her. “Where did you go?” She teased him but once she looked at him she knew he was thinking about leaving tomorrow.
K.C. looked away from her. When he started to talk she could hear his voice crack. “I love you so much.” He looked down at her and watched her carefully. “I am so afraid that you won’t wait for me. That you will find someone while I’m gone.”
The teenage girl sat up and held his face between her hands. “I need you to listen to me K.C Guthrie; you and I have made it this far. I will not be letting go of you. You’re the only person that’s ever going to be on my heart. I love you and what we have is going to be for forever.” Clare pulled him down to her so she could kiss him. The two continued kissing until she pulled away from him and smiled softly. “I’m ready.. I don’t want to wait a single moment longer.”
Clare came back to reality as the baby that was conceived that night stopped whimpering and started crying. She picked the baby up and trying to sooth him with her words and rocking him softly in her arms. Once he was calmed down enough, the mom walked back to the desk sitting back down in front of the screen. Clare looked up at K.C. as she shifted the baby in her arms so K.C. could see him directly. The girl hid half of her face with the baby’s and gave him a few kisses. She sniffled and looked at K.C. who was crying at this point. “K.C. meet your son, Cameron Jacob Guthrie. Cammy this is your daddy.” She told the two month old and father.
K.C. covered his mouth with his hand as he took in all of his son’s features. “He looks like you.. He has his mommy’s eyes.” His voice cracked and she watched as he swallowed the lump in his throat. “Clare, he’s so beautiful.” He looked at her for a moment before looking back at the baby.
Clare smiled as she watched him looking at their child, their baby boy. “He has a lot of you in him, his nose, his smile…”She stopped talking and looked down at the baby who was smiling at his dad. “That’s the one right there.”The mom shifted him again in her arms and looked at K.C., happily.
K.C. witnessed the love that his girl and his son had for each other. He hoped that soon he would be a part of that as well. He looked at Clare with a concerned expression. “So you’re okay? You aren’t doing this by yourself?”
She tilted her head to the side and shook her head no. “Of course not, this little guy has two grandmas’ that have been helping mommy so much.” Clare looked at him. “It’s really hard on me but I am managing. Our moms are really helpful and supportive.”
K.C. nodded and smiled at them. “I can’t wait to come home and hold him, hold you. “ Clare could hear something in the background and knew what that meant. “I have to go. I’ve heard that my unit is getting sent home soon. Don’t let him grow up too much, okay? And don’t forget me.”
Clare laughed softly and shook her head. “Forget you? We could never. But you need to go, remember no goodbyes. We’ve been waiting for you and we always will K.C.” She blew him a kiss as he logged off. Once she was sure that he was gone she let the tears fall once again. She got up and walked to her bed and laid down with Cameron on her chest. She ran her hand along his back and whispered through her tears. “We’ll keep waiting.”
