Last day in Roma! 🇮🇹

Clarence Womack. IPErome. Biomedical engineering. For our very last day in Rome, we visited the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel to absorb as much history as we could before we left. In the pictures above we see a lot of Egytian influence on the art presented in this museum. My favorite part of the trip was seeing the hieroglyphics, reading about the beliefs and rituals of ancient Egytians, and seeing the mummies. This was the perfect finale for the trip. 🙌🏾

Ristorante Porto 🦐

My time here in Rome is winding down, but I just had to dedicate a post to my food journey abroad. 😋 Back at home, I usually don't eat much or try new things. My go-to meals include chicken tenders and fries, spaghetti, and maybe tacos on a good day. 😭 It's surprising to say that I've tried many new things abroad including: mussels and clams, sushi, tiramisu, carbonara, calamari, squids, and my favorite meal of all (as shown above) "tasty paccheri with lobster rocket and pachino"! The experience taught me the importance of being open to trying new foods even if they might look super weird. 😂 I made solid food choices abroad and will definitely return to states ready to not only try, but cook new things as well. Someone get me a TV show! 😏

Clarence Womack. IPErome. Biomedical engineering. Here in Rome, I am taking a Principles of Engineering (material science) course and another course titled The Social History of the Italian Mafia. The Mafia course has only been 3 weeks and the amount of knowledge I have learned is incredible. Not only have we focused on Italian organized crime groups such as the Sicilian Mafia (Cosa Nostra specifically), the Calabrian ‘Ndrangheta, and the Neopolitan Camorra, but we have learned so much about the geographical significance and history of the entire country. Focusing on places like Rome, Palermo, Naples, and Sicily, I will admit, I feel that I may know more truth about the history of Italy in comparison to America. For the final week of this course, I plan to prepare an essay and final presentation discussing an essential part of organized crime: money laundering! 👀 This book by John Dickie is where some of our readings have taken place and I appreciate this author/class so much. Very eye opening experience! 😇

Home to the famous Leonardo Da Vinci (artist and engineer🗿), Guccio Gucci (Italian designer 👕) and Michelangelo (painter and architect 🎭), I present to you...Florence, Italy. 🌉 Exploring the heart of lots of Italian culture has been one of my most exciting adventures thus far. On the left is my attempt to look as fresh as possible in the city where fashion arguable originated and the right shows an image of one of the many ancient Cathedrals decorating the city. Florence is the birthplace of a period in European history when dramatic new thoughts and behaviors surfaced for the first time in the form of art, architecture, politics, science, and literature. You may know this period as The Renaissance or the Age of Enlightenment! 💡Overall, Florence is an extremely truly inspiring place to see!

Clarence Womack. IPE Rome. Biomedical engineering. This week’s adventures involved a pretty cool pasta making class. 🍝 I’m not the best cook or anything, but this class made me feel like a chef! Pasta making is an art that you can get better at every time you make it. Italians love to make pasta from scratch using homemade tomato sauce and fresh herbs from their gardens. This is quite different from the way pasta is prepared back in the states and you can definitely taste the quality after the dish is finished. I can’t wait to make my own pasta once I return home 😋.

Here are some shots from today's adventure while climbing Mount Vesuvius in Campania. 🌋Mount Vesuvius is known for its eruption in 79 AD that not only buried Pompeii, but many other neighboring cities as well. Being one of the most populated volcanoes in the world, it's for sure one of the most dangerous places to live. Super thankful for the opportunity to climb the volcano and enjoy it's beauty...even more thankful it decided not to erupt again today! 😌🌞

Wine tasting in Tuscany, Italy with some fellow Wolverines! 💙💛 Tuscany is known for its very precise fermentation practices, and as a result, its superior wines! 🍇 Besides the fine wine, hilly landscapes, and tasty cheese…it’s also where the story of Pinocchio originated! How cool is that? 👦🏽😝 Also a little birdie told me, the Obamas visited the exact place we did to taste some vintage wines not too long ago 🕴🏽💃🏾

Seeing the Colosseum was actually breath taking! 🕌 In ancient times, the Colosseum was home to gladiator fights, animal hunting, dramas, and all types of "entertainment" for the people of Rome. Despite the earthquakes that partially destroyed the place, it still stands tall and may actually be one of the greatest pieces of Roman architecture in this amazing city. Engineering is so universal! 🧠🤓💡🏛🙌🏾
