THE ULTIMATE CANDY BAR SWEEPSTAKES IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN CCOMIC-BOOKS?

PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on print adverts from "GHOST RIDER" Vol. 2 #31 (August, 1978), promoting a "Clark Bar Superhero Sweepstakes" in which the winner gets an all expenses paid trip to New York City (three days, two nights), a complimentary tour of the Marvel Comics offices, and then get drawn by a professional comic book artist and featured in their favorite Marvel Comics title!

Man, I'd transcribe some of this by hand to get to the gist of things, but the print is just too damn small. I also don't get why Marvel stopped doing things like this, but it's not helping that these current day books have lost a lot of goodwill with the paying customer, and their original readership has dwindled significantly as a result.

What made my day and gave me hope:

History time: In 1917, David L. Clark started producing the Clark Bar, and Clark Candies (first as a family business, then as a corporate entity) made them, then they were sold to foodmaker Beatrice in 1995 and Whoppers creator Leaf in 1983, then a new Clark Bar Company company which bought Leaf’s assets started offering them, and then in 1999 the line went to Necco. In mid-2018 Necco folded, and its assets were purchased by Dum-Dum sucker maker Spangler, and they then sold the Clark Bars line to Boyer, maker of Mallo-Cups. I’m happy to say some of Clark’s other candies are also in production in smaller form; Zagnut is made by Hershey now (though is a challenge to find) and Skybar was obtained at auction in 2018 and is now in production by a small gourmet food company in Sudbury, MA. And if you wondered: Necco wafers, Sweethearts message hearts and Canada Mints will be back in production by Spangler in the near future, and other products like the candy buttons or the mint and banana chews have new homes.

After some technical difficulties in November of last year with the making of the bars followed by trouble with the production of wrappers, Clark Bars are set for a nationwide return to the market early this year; presently they are only available at Boyer’s factory outlet in Altoona, PA. While the whole Clark Bars are still not out widely, the crushed bits from their production efforts have become available as a hybrd product with Boyer’s existing line of peanut butter cups... and today I found some at Big!Lots.   ^_____^
