Dream Concert
This is a photo of Tatiana Schwaninger at their recent Knockdown Center show over the weekend. I was there in the front left crowd, hypnotized, mesmerized, watching one of my favourite musical acts of the past few years. In this manipulated photo, I removed Tatiana “Tati” from the stage to show her only through the screen of the technology which records her. I also removed any sign of human heads/bodies aside from their arms, which hold up their phones. This piece is not a comment on screen addiction or our inability to “live in the moment”. I wanted to explore how our perception of music has become adapted/inescapable with the convenience of our phones, and whether the music we consume through layers of technology is still the same as the music we experience live.
Another layer I tried to explore through this photo piece was my relationship to Tatiana as a public figure whom I look up to with high levels of attachment. I have no relationship with her prior to seeing this show live, aside from the para-social perception of her I have through watching her perform on YouTube videos and Instagram reels. She has inspired me immensely along the terms of how I want to be perceived. Of course, it had always been my dream to see her perform in person, and leaving the concert, I felt the beginning of an accelerated rush of inspiration that I still feel to this day.
