This clipping from the Princeton Standard from December 17, 1869 refers to the Princeton Class of 1870's Senior Orations on December 11, 1869. The program, of course, reveals nothing about the incident.

On October 20, 1869, the Pittsburgh Commercial reported that Frank Pierce of the Princeton Class of 1870 would soon inherit a million dollars from the estate of his uncle, former U.S. President Franklin Pierce. In 2024 dollars, that's about $23 million. We haven't found out exactly what may have taken place, but alum Pierce seems to have had a drastic reversal of fortune by 1902.

Although Princeton University was not officially so named until 1896, it was pretty common for people to refer to the College of New Jersey as Princeton College well before then. Here, we see an early example of Princeton’s vibrant orange, too, though in the 1870s a much lighter, yellowish shade was also commonly seen. Here, an orange “P” and “C” for Princeton College intertwine in orange with the numeral “70″ for the Class of 1870 on an invitation to their Class Day exercises. Adrian Hoffman Joline, Class of 1870, kept this in his scrapbook.

Menu Monday: The Class of 1870 asked for this quote from the Princeton Inn when planning their 40th reunion in 1910. The $5 charge per person in 1910 would be about $130 in 2019 dollars.
