I was gonna add a whole paragraph of end notes but decided against it, so if you're curious on any historical evidence or Classi9 universe stuff, read this post!

I wanna preface this by saying I am disgustingly educated in Tchaikovsky's real life and it's very interesting to me overall. These are just some little notes I wanted to add/elaborate on:

"Kotik" is a nickname Tchaikovsky had for Kotek, which translates to "little cat"/"kitten" and is used to affectionately refer to a male partner or loved one. In letters to his brother, Tchaikovsky would use "Kotik" to refer to Kotek. The first letter describes this almost "honeymoon stage" of their relationship, then the next letter describes this love being "subdued," and finally the third is where he is conflicted on what he feels for Kotek.

The whole fear of head falling off thing is true! For much of his early career, the real Tchaikovsky actually hated conducting and had intense stage-fright. Later in life, when other composers conducted their own works (Wagner, Brahms, Strauss, Mahler just to name a few), he took up conducting again and not only did his head not fall off, his career as a conductor took off and well, he went on tour across Europe and even came to America. Neat, huh?

I wasn't sure of who to pick to sort of walk in on this scene, and looking back on it now that it's finished, it should've been Mozart but I misread the manga panel. In chapter 4, I thought it was Bach who said "have you forgotten that thing about Tchaiko" and while I know he's probably referencing Tchaiko's whole freaky thing w the highkey sadism, I thought it could also be a reference to his closeted homosexuality. Y'know, something no one wants to say out loud but suspect, I mean Tchaiko was the only one that went on a date w Rentaro WHEN HE THOUGHT SHE WAS A GUY!!! Also based on the real Tchaikovsky, that man is gay. Argue with the wall. Anyway, in the manga panel it is Mozart, but out of laziness (and I also just liked it being Bach anyway), I kept Bach.

This is set a year before Rentaro arrives which fortunately makes sense since during the manga, Tchaikovsky performs The Sleeping Beauty for the competition. Swan Lake was published in 1877, The Sleeping Beauty in 1890, and The Nutcracker in 1892, so adds up.

Also, a lot of Swan Lake was written while Tchaikovsky was involved with Kotek, so it's pretty likely a lot of the violin heavy movements were written with Kotek in mind. Just two years later in 1878, Tchaikovsky wrote a violin concerto where he heavily collaborated with Kotek and practically dedicated the work to him, but in the end decided against it.

uni has got me by the balls rn but short classi9 rant(?) aka just me pointing something out that I thought was cool under the cut pls read if u read I love u

SO in this chapter, Haydn and Rentaro are like "oh we're allies w all these ppl," and they start naming like Mozart, Liszt, and Wagner. However, at the end they add Tchaikovsky and Rentaro even points out that they were pretty much indifferent until the mention of Tchaikovsky. I've always thought this was a little interesting and I have my own theories as to why

1. Tchaikovsky is VERY well educated.

Tchaikovsky originally studied at the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in St. Petersburg (which was widely known for producing graduates who'd go on to work as jurists, imperial administrators, civil servants, etc.) meaning he was educated in the theory of law. According to this letter (and the notes and references at the bottom), at 12 years old, he managed to score high enough that he was among the best 10 candidates that would advance to the next class, competing with other kids who were as old as 15 and still taking the preparatory course. Out of all the members of Class S-, he's the only one to have an education in something other than music and, despite that, was still accepted into the conservatory. We can also see this when he clocks the shit out of Brahms in chapter 16. At 19, Tchaikovsky even worked in civil service for 3 years before enrolling in music theory classes and later enrolling in the newly established St. Petersburg Conservatory at 22, becoming one of the first full-time students. Pretty interesting how one of the most well-known composers did not initially study music, right?

2. He came from a family of civil servants and engineers, not necessarily musicians.

While music was very much encouraged and appreciated, his immediate family members were not musicians who played professionally/composed for a living. His father was a mining engineer who worked in iron works for the government, his older brother was also a mining engineer, one of his younger brothers pursued law and diplomacy, and one of his cousins was a military officer (who famously commissioned a march from him). So, lots of government involvement which maybe would have intimidated and discouraged others from being on bad terms with him.

3. Bro locks in. #mysterious

It's mentioned from time to time that he looks pretty scary when he doesn't have his usual smile. Imagine having beef with a tall, serious looking man who's EXTREMELY educated in something you'll likely never understand who also comes from a decent family, many of which work for the imperial government. Wild stuff.
