Father’s Day so excuse to post my favourite picture of my dad

It’s my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary soon and I’ve been helping my mum make a surprise photo montage for my dad.

From the late 1980s until about 2009 we’ve struggled to find any pictures of them (a) together or (b) alone, because they were both so obsessed with being parents they only took photos either of or with their kids.

It’s really quite heartwarming to see. Particularly looking at pictures of my dad, who was physically extremely “classic dad”-shaped from the age of about 22 onwards (bald, glasses, an abundance of large backpacks, baseball caps and jorts), just having the time of his life being a dad.

I see lots of dads in the library who have little to no enthusiasm or engagement with their kids, meanwhile in 1995 my dad is playing Disney princesses with us and wearing silly hats and reading us books and swinging us around and the like and it’s like. This is everything he ever wanted. He was born for this. He is the dad-shaped dad.
