Learning about the lives of famous dead authors is a continous roller coster of dissapointment.
"He loved his wife very much and wrote poems about her." The wife in question was his 13yo cousin.
"He loved animals and had lots of pets." All of them had slur names.
"His wife was a writer too." He either didn't allow her to write because he considered women to be inferior or locked her in a basement and forced her to write in order to steal her work.
"She was a revolutionary feminist author." She was also racist and antisemitic and now her books are labeled as white feminism.
"She lived a beautiful love story." She conciously became his mistress and then got rid of his wife in order to marry him.
"He was queer in a time when homosexuality was forbidden." He had a lavender marriage with a woman who didn't know he's gay and found out he cheated on her with a man all this time only when it was too late.
"His works were ahead of his times." He was still openly racist, homophobic, antisemitic and sexist.
"He married twice." He abandoned his first wife whom he cheated on for over a decade and their ten children in order to marry his mistress.
"They were a product of their times." Most of them died in the previous century or even more recently.
