“Have you heard the question about the tree in the forest?” Claude asks, loudly, like he’s trying to chase away the silence. “If a tree falls in a forest and there’s nobody to hear it—”
“Does it even make a sound?” Ignatz kicks a stone. It tumbles a couple feet in front of him. Moving earth. “Yeah.”
“What do you think?”
Ignatz ponders the question for a moment; weighs it on the palms of his frigid hands. “I think it does,” he says. "It has to."
