This photographic print from June, 1898 shows an 18-year old Marion Graham Nimlet (nee Whitaker) and an array of human and kitty companions at her home in Northeast Philadelphia. Marion was the granddaughter of William Whitaker (1813-1878), owner of William Whitaker & Sons, one of the city’s oldest textile mills.
This image comes from the Hagley Library’s collection of Whitaker family photographs (Accession 1982.253), a partner collection to our collection of William Whitaker & Sons, Inc., Records, 1809-1970 (Accession 1471). These collections document life, landscapes, and the built environments of eastern Pennsylvania’s rural manufacturing villages from the early 19th century to the mid-20th Century, particularly the region around the Cedar Grove textile mills. They also include images of the friends, family, travel, homes, and property of the Whitaker family.
