I have to talk about them once more, sorry.
Some important chairs from season 3
the flower chair of safety
Starting with this scene from my very favorite episode with a (absolutely beautiful) chair. Ivan switches on the light and it’s the first thing perfectly illuminated. They are in Ivan’s space, where he can feel safe, like a cozy comfortable small garden amid all the unknown and change. Comfort and support. (did I mention this chair is gorgeous, I need it)
The empty chairs for missing people and support
Further along, we get quite a lot of empty chairs. They are staged so purposefully and really jump out at you.
Ivan sitting between piles of empty chairs hints at those vacant places. Empty places after people left him behind. Them being stacked on top of each other gives the impression of something temporary, a transitional state he is in. He reinforces this by sitting on the table, ready to move again, not really belonging. It’s a manifestation of the loneliness he is experiencing. The chairs will eventually need to be used again.
In contrast, Lovro does sit down, almost indulgently cozy, but also detached from reality, while the empty chairs are right next to him. This whole setting looks like a therapy space, but there is also no one there to support him in his escape from reality. And even the people reaching out (Yakov on the phone) cannot really reach him.
The broken chair as mental state
In the rooftop scene, the broken chair already reflects Ivan’s broken energy and the severed connection between him and Lovro. Ivan uses the moment trying to address unaddressed issues (“does he like me?”) in an attempt to restore some stability, but somehow fails and leaves. The lack of stability and support becomes very evident.
(also the contrast between sitting down on a chair and being all the way up there is a heartbreaking way to show the inner conflict)
missing and flipped chairs for detachment
In the restless state that Ivan is in during episode 8, a chair is not considered anymore, even when he is specifically asked (“can’t you do it [seated] on the table?”). The floor feels safe, without any boundaries or notions of something/someone missing, just space and possibilities.
Eventually, this leads to rearranging the chairs to build something new out of them in a burst of excitement. Nobody can now sit on these chairs, signaling the detached state that Ivan is in.
vacant chairs as an option to take up space and finding your place
Lovro might be struggling throughout the season, but is still included in various groups, or gets offered an empty chair to join somewhere. Even when feeling alienated, support is an option for him to take. There is space for him.
This is also taken up again by Ivan’s comment in episode 10.

A little combo I had a few nights ago with my brain.
My brain: Yo!
Me: What?
My brain: Remember that one aspect of how patriarchy views femininity and masculinity?
Me: Yeah, femininity is viewed as inferior and as dangerous, and masculinity can't help itself upon the evil seduction of women, what about it?
My brain: Femininity is viewed as a threat, right? Now, how are trans women and trans men depicted by the anti trans aspect of patriarchy?
Me: Oh well, trans women are viewed as inherent sexual predators and trans men are viewed as groomed little girls-...... WAIT A DAMN MINUTE
If you guys need anything, I’ve been Aaron.
