Males take heed! (not heels)
I was on the train this morning pulling into the city loop, as two testosterone fueled guys stepped on.
They were in mid conversation in fine debating form. Almost naturally as many of us do -when on the train-, turn down your music, lower your book and listen in vicariously about the topic of choice.
What I heard was not a typically male discussion. Not about footy, drinking or cars that I’m easily accustomed to after going to an all boys secondary school. But it was a topic that caught me a little by surprise.
Their topic of choice was a about the reason why girls wear heels to Uni?
This got me to thinking about why girls of a Uni-student age do a lot of other things. Like the use of make-up, mascara, eye-shadow and lip-gloss, removing hair, shaving or waxing it, clothing: dresses, jewellery and shoes. My thoughts lead me to think of a mountain of reasons.
This brought me to our topic of today:
Why don’t we, as the young male species of the population, put in greater effort when it comes to the clothing we wear?
We’re happy to go to Uni, easily dressed in jeans and t-shirts and we’re good to go. I had a think about this with conclusions resulting in expressions of laziness and “it’s only Uni”, coming to mind.
But in a fast paced world where first impressions are paramount, I’d like to know why we don’t put our best dressed foot forward, whenever we can. In the words of many motivational speakers: "every day is an opportunity to make a positive impression, with a potential acquaintance, lecturer or even employer."
While you ponder on this philosophical idea (probably suited for another forum), shall we get down to business?
From general observation, self exploration and the odd street survey. Our answer to this is because guys do not know where to go, to get the best deals, prices and bargains when it comes to shopping for themselves; that’s where student-fix comes in.
One place to start, you on your way to potential greater prospects, may be to head down to ‘Clearit’ on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.
Located halfway down Brunswick St to the North of the City you will find it.
After venturing down last weekend I found, I will be shopping there for the rest of my Uni career, if not life!
The Clearit store is like a high-end marketplace; Housing an array of brands like Jack London (for more formalwear clothing) to ‘Dangerfield’, ‘St Lenny’ and ‘Black Monday’.
ALL OF THE CLOTHING IS HALF, IF NOT MORE OFF! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! It is all clothing from the previous fashion seasons, so very much a winning deal already!
*Disclaimer: Yes we’ll admit this does seem like a TV shopping channel ad, but if something is ridiculously cheap and fits into student expenses well, then we’re on top of it.
The store is about the size of a small supermarket with rows, upon rows of t-shirts, shorts, pants, jackets, and shoe’s for guys. While this is all very well, what really makes it worth your while is the Reduced-Rack and $10 for 2 Rack. These are located in the centre of the store (and also placed right at the back).
*Disclaimer: While some stuff is really cheap others are not i.e a $40 pair of chino shorts. NO DEAL!
Now you’re probably thinking why are these brands great? Or what’s in it for me? And definitely thinking why on earth is a student blog focusing on a fashion topic?
Well let me propose to you guys out there, the notion of what were to happen if suddenly you dressed a bit better?
Think about it on a basic level. If a girl wearing heels, can stir up a conversation between guys, then wouldn’t guys who take a slight interest in what they wear get girls noticing.
The core benefits that will serve you well in your new Uni lifestyle, include:
Location. The store is easy to get to either walking from Parliament station or taking a tram up Victoria Street and turning down it. These feeds well into any varying timetable.
The pricing, oh...the pricing! So if I were to put things into perspective; I bought 3 business shirts, 4 t-shirts and a jacket for a total of $170.
Now hold on if your not convinced on the pricing, before retreating away and say to yourself “I’m living on a Uni budget how is this possible?”, let me leave you with a life changing thought: If one saves and gets good quality purchases at a good price, then one will not need to spend any more money, for quite a long period of time. Hence the term "Investment clothing".
Thereby, man-guy logic: if you can purchase good clothes, in bulk, at a great price then are you not in front of the pack already?
