Libraries aren't just for nerds...
So on your journey lunch is always a vital part to any day; what better place to have it then in the presence of the State Library of Victoria.
As one of our cherished and favorite spots to have lunch; hanging out during the warmer months, is a very enjoyable and authentic Uni experience. In case you’ve missed it the; monolithic building is located directly opposite Melbourne Central.
The building stands alone as a beautiful example of Melbourne architecture. When you're walking up the concrete steps and past the tall pillars, welcoming you at the entrance savor this moment.
While maintaining a distinctly Australian feel through the numerous paintings that line the walls. Enjoy those national landscapes and portraits it is a truly humbling experience.
After entering the main hall you will see just how large the building really is. With the rows upon rows of private study tables and books in abundance. The State Library of Vitoria is a perfect place to study, while you can still take advantage of the free wifi!
The great thing about the Library is that its renovations and restorations have not taken away from its remaining heritage like aesthetics. For the architecture enthusiasts out there I’m sure you can agree that the buildings stands as one of Melbourne most iconic places to be.
If you’re meeting friends and eating lunch outside on the concrete steps or grassy areas, you’ll feel like you’re on the set of Gossip Girl just casually going about your business in surroundings that fit royalty.
Lunch at the State Library only works during the warmer months. Otherwise you’ll be sitting on wet grass. So not fun!
Being in perfect walking distance from some of the best lunch places (Bread Top, Don Dons, Sushi bars, Subway, Snag Stand, Nandos, QV and Countless Cafes), tram stops and a train station (Melbourne Central); there is really no excuse to not experience lunch at the State Library!
When venturing down Swanston Street hopefully with lunch in hand and a laptop or books in the other, you may be lucky enough to dodge the campaigners (they really don’t like your scarf or tie…its part of the pitch) and land yourself some prestige real estate, on the grass.
For those who have been to this magnificent place before, you might remember during peak lunch hours how hard it is to find a spot. So get in early, otherwise you’ll be rubbing shoulders with your Uni student doppelgänger – the pretentious version - (trust me its happened before).
Once you’ve arrived and found a nice spot under the warm sun. Get your lunch out, laptops and books and just chill out with your buddies. Finish off some assignments and have a little break from that school environment.
Just take in the overwhelming experiences, that Melbourne has to offer.
TELL US WHAT YOU THINK OF THE VIC STATE LIBRARY…
Males take heed! (not heels)
I was on the train this morning pulling into the city loop, as two testosterone fueled guys stepped on.
They were in mid conversation in fine debating form. Almost naturally as many of us do -when on the train-, turn down your music, lower your book and listen in vicariously about the topic of choice.
What I heard was not a typically male discussion. Not about footy, drinking or cars that I’m easily accustomed to after going to an all boys secondary school. But it was a topic that caught me a little by surprise.
Their topic of choice was a about the reason why girls wear heels to Uni?
This got me to thinking about why girls of a Uni-student age do a lot of other things. Like the use of make-up, mascara, eye-shadow and lip-gloss, removing hair, shaving or waxing it, clothing: dresses, jewellery and shoes. My thoughts lead me to think of a mountain of reasons.
This brought me to our topic of today:
Why don’t we, as the young male species of the population, put in greater effort when it comes to the clothing we wear?
We’re happy to go to Uni, easily dressed in jeans and t-shirts and we’re good to go. I had a think about this with conclusions resulting in expressions of laziness and “it’s only Uni”, coming to mind.
But in a fast paced world where first impressions are paramount, I’d like to know why we don’t put our best dressed foot forward, whenever we can. In the words of many motivational speakers: "every day is an opportunity to make a positive impression, with a potential acquaintance, lecturer or even employer."
While you ponder on this philosophical idea (probably suited for another forum), shall we get down to business?
From general observation, self exploration and the odd street survey. Our answer to this is because guys do not know where to go, to get the best deals, prices and bargains when it comes to shopping for themselves; that’s where student-fix comes in.
One place to start, you on your way to potential greater prospects, may be to head down to ‘Clearit’ on Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.
Located halfway down Brunswick St to the North of the City you will find it.
After venturing down last weekend I found, I will be shopping there for the rest of my Uni career, if not life!
The Clearit store is like a high-end marketplace; Housing an array of brands like Jack London (for more formalwear clothing) to ‘Dangerfield’, ‘St Lenny’ and ‘Black Monday’.
ALL OF THE CLOTHING IS HALF, IF NOT MORE OFF! I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! It is all clothing from the previous fashion seasons, so very much a winning deal already!
*Disclaimer: Yes we’ll admit this does seem like a TV shopping channel ad, but if something is ridiculously cheap and fits into student expenses well, then we’re on top of it.
The store is about the size of a small supermarket with rows, upon rows of t-shirts, shorts, pants, jackets, and shoe’s for guys. While this is all very well, what really makes it worth your while is the Reduced-Rack and $10 for 2 Rack. These are located in the centre of the store (and also placed right at the back).
*Disclaimer: While some stuff is really cheap others are not i.e a $40 pair of chino shorts. NO DEAL!
Now you’re probably thinking why are these brands great? Or what’s in it for me? And definitely thinking why on earth is a student blog focusing on a fashion topic?
Well let me propose to you guys out there, the notion of what were to happen if suddenly you dressed a bit better?
Think about it on a basic level. If a girl wearing heels, can stir up a conversation between guys, then wouldn’t guys who take a slight interest in what they wear get girls noticing.
Food for thought, boys.
The core benefits that will serve you well in your new Uni lifestyle, include:
Location. The store is easy to get to either walking from Parliament station or taking a tram up Victoria Street and turning down it. These feeds well into any varying timetable.
The pricing, oh...the pricing! So if I were to put things into perspective; I bought 3 business shirts, 4 t-shirts and a jacket for a total of $170.
Now hold on if your not convinced on the pricing, before retreating away and say to yourself “I’m living on a Uni budget how is this possible?”, let me leave you with a life changing thought: If one saves and gets good quality purchases at a good price, then one will not need to spend any more money, for quite a long period of time. Hence the term "Investment clothing".
Thereby, man-guy logic: if you can purchase good clothes, in bulk, at a great price then are you not in front of the pack already?
Enjoy!
Let us know if you agree or not or if you’ve been to the store.

WHEN THE WEATHER IS FINALLY NICE AND I PLAN TO HAVE LUNCH ON THE LAWN AT THE STATE LIBRARY.
BUT WHEN I GET THERE AND SEE ALL THE PEOPLE:
The Asian Beer Cafe!
Salutations Dear Uni-kids. Following on from your homework, to go visit Rooftop Bar in ‘Curtin House’. It gives me great pleasure to take you on another journey to one amazing place, a stone’s throw into the centre of Melbourne’s CBD and University Precinct.
So get your travel-guide and language mix-tape out, cause today we’re off to the ‘Asian Beer Cafe’.
*It used To once be known as Cao Gao; pronounced {‘chow’-’g’-‘our’} (be advised we still refer to it as this, even though the name changed).
The Asian Beer Cafe is one place of mysterious delights, full of exotic detail.
Both a place to venture to, during a gruelling 4-hour break between classes, at night over the weekend or as a single experience for those less traveled “home types”.
When on your journey, you will find it situated behind the Pancake Parlor, next to Nandos and near the photo-booth, at the escalators on level 3 of Melbourne Central.
While I could spend an entire day talking about the intricate details and exotic interiors of the ‘Asian Beer Cafe’ some of which include
Sensual incense
Buddah Statues
Ying Dynastyesque furnishings
Anime themed bathrooms
The Travel guide mix tape in the toilets
The cushions..OH! The Cushions!
Red-lighting…(its a fact that everyone looks hotter in red-lighting)
The majestic view on the balcony space looking across Swanston Street (one view that gives me the urge to thrust a small lion cub named Simba into the Air every time I walk out onto it…just cause)
Classic Ninja movies playing on the flat screens
Disclaimers: This is just a small fraction to the true magnificence of the Asian Beer Cafe but I have to stop here.
Basically solely on looks; the Asian Beer Cafe is basically as awesome as the scene from Kill Bill. In the Oriental Gang restaurant house where Uma Thurman scalps Lucy Liu’s head clean off!
Moving to what is most important, aside from the interiors, the real reason to be heading there is the Disney theme-named Pizza’s! Who doesn't like Disney right?
(Be advised they will actually change your life!)
Not only with titles including Mulan, Lilo & Stitch, Pinocchio and Snow White, they are just as cute, but because between 11 am to 3 pm they are $4… (Yes, you read right) just 4 bucks!
I’m going to be quite biased in recommending the ‘Ba Bar The Elephant’: a Tandoori Chicken Pizza with Sour Cream.
If anything from today’s Student Fix post, we need to just simply stress the greatness of these pizza’s. They are beneficial to the wallet and are made in the most harmonious atmospheres.
Did I mention they are truly delicious in there gourmet styled ways with vegetarian and gluten free options available as well.
So go-fourth…Visit us on Facebook and Tweet us with your thoughts
Just go there, please. You will thank yourself for doing this.

This is great. Insight to how University Students really talk, think and act.
Lets be honest we can all be Lazy, hungry, sexy and dumb but this is so real i found myself saying some of this shit...
COOKIES ON A ROOF, WITH A VIEW.
For many first year Uni students heading into the city can be overwhelming; finding a trendy kind of place for drinks and catch-ups is even harder. Luckily for you hotties Rooftop Bar - located within Curtin House can be one of those places to go!
One of the first weeks at Uni we got together at The Rooftop Bar, for birthday drinks and a bit of a mingle.
The bar is between Lonsdale and Little Bourke on Swanston street, look for Cookies two shops away from Photo-Plus and across the road from Off Ya Tree.
When looking for it there is usually a wall length poster promoting an event, movie or whatever right next to the doorway. It may look dodgy at first because it kind of looks like the entrance to an old english pub, but when you make your way up 7 flights of stairs, its an experience you won’t forget!
Rooftop has a fairly casual dress code but for the ladies; if you are planning on dressing up, try your best not to wear heels because you will be walking up so many flights of stairs, you'll start having visions
Once you're inside, if you’re thinking of taking the elevator we’d recommend not to. Unless your happy to wait 10 minutes for it.
Try and complete your exercise, for the week (or year) and visualize your frosty beer, champs or cider in a pink plastic cup; whilst also trying to miss the odd dude or gal who could use a shower, stumbling down the stairs.
While on your travels to the top: for the fashionistas out there you can enjoy the cute boutique on level 5.
For the Karate Kids: the Kung - Fu Academy might appeal to you and for the Movie buffs; you can enjoy the Rooftop Cinema during the Summer months when they show the classics and cult flicks like Desperately Seeking Susan, Revenge of the Nerds and Jaws.
Once you’ve made it to at the top, take a moment to enjoy the amazing 360 degrees of Melbourne sky-line architecture, that will surely knock your socks off.
Ladies if you're into those Aussie-Indie boys, then Rooftop is a venue that should be your new hunting ground.
While it is also definitely the place to be, the food at the ‘Beatbox Kitchen’ is also something not to be missed! With a menu of wraps, fries, schnitzels and burgers, they are sure to keep you full throughout the day and night at around $15.
Every time you’re at Rooftop, you’re bound to meet just a taste of quirky and intriguing people, the majority of which are also Uni students!
It’s a great place to be and visit but definitely go to even catch those rare rays of sun that Melbourne has.
Do enjoy and let us know what you think by liking us on Facebook or following us on twitter and Tumblr.
See you
WHEN MY FRIENDS AND I GO TO ROOFTOP BAR.
