I’m a hospice chaplain. Many of my patients are living with dementia. I’m always looking for creative ways to enrich their lives, and offer something soothing. This is the second of a “fiddle muff” that will keep their fingers busy and give them something soft to hold. I also make a little bunnies (“some bunny loves you“). Knitting is a way of focusing my mind as I engage my fingers. I can get a little squirrelly and jump from task to task. Knitting makes it easy (or easier!) to reflect on the day, on the patients that I saw, on their families and their burdens. But here in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, I find my anxiety can spike very easily! I still have to see my patients. I’m living in a “hot spot”. I fight fear every day. There’s so many unknowns; everything is ramped up and it’s difficult to calm myself. This simple act of knitting has become an important part of my Lenten practice. To breathe. Pray. Knit. Purl. And sometimes cry. But trust. Hold tight to my faith. Lean on friends, family, and siblings in Christ who accept my honesty and encourage me to persevere, as our very earth seems to change right under our feet. One stitch. One row. One project at a time. Blessed be. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
