Why I think we should be positive about the future of our Earth
Yes, we screwed up really, really bad. Yes our Earth is in big trouble. No, we do not have much time left. But hear me out and read this post whenever you are feeling like we are all plain doomed.
- ‘Do you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men. It is the music of a people who will not be uneducated about our world again.’ Guys... people know. More and more of them. We have been screaming about how the Earth is screwed and people are actually starting to listen. Thousands of teens are marching the streets, angry, because they KNOW, and they want change. I had the privilege of being at one of the strikes in Brussels and it rocked my world. At school, people think I’m pretty extreme for using shampoo and conditionerbars instead of regular bottes... No one even batted an eye at that there. I remember helping people putting together a coffin ‘to bury the earth in’. They carried that coffin all around Brussels that day. And for the first time in my life I thought: good god, I’m not alone in this, not at all. It’s not just some vegan youtubers and some sustainable bloggers that care about this. Millions of people care as much or even more than I do.
- People come ask me for advice. I have had multiple people coming up to me, asking for some vegetarian recipes or advice on how to cut out plastic. I myself am not doing that crazy great either (I still need about 1,2 Earths to sustain my lifestyle, I know, I’m working on it) but people see that my footprint is way lower then theirs and come to me for help.
- We are slowly losing our ‘extreme’ label. People don’t look as surprised as they did two and a half years ago when they hear I’m a vegetarian. Certainly people my age. It has gotten even better: I constantly hear the beautiful words ‘Really? So am I!’ At parties, a vegetarian and a non-vegetarian option is almost the standard. The older generations are a bit more difficult, but even my mom and her friends (most well in their fifties) pick the vegetarian option on the menu more often. My meat and fish loving mother became a flexetarian. A term that didn’t even exist 10 years ago. If I said I really liked the thrift store 5 years ago, people would look at me like I said something dirty. Now, they don’t find it that abnormal anymore. Same for reusable waterbottles, tote bags (seriously, who doesn’t have one?) and bringing your own lunch.
- People are picking up after themselves. Huge beach clean ups, recycling, upcycling... I have never seen so many initiatives rising everywhere. I have never seen so many laws signed and so much awareness spread.
I know we’re still doing pretty damn bad, but I have hope. Because people have a will to survive, and the only way they will is by treating climate change as a real threath and doing something about it. I have hope because I can’t accept this is how we’re all gonna go. I can’t accept all the coral and the fish and the rainforests will be gone in my lifetime. I can’t and I won’t. And I believe I won’t have to.
I think we are slowly making people aware of the problems and they truly want to help. They just see this massive challenge and no way to solve it, no wonder they get melancholic and desperate. Start saying things like ‘we’re all going to die anyway, what’s the point?’. They don’t understand yet. They don’t understand the power of the consumer, or the influence just one person can have. But we can educate them. And when all else fails we can always say: ‘If we’re all gonna die anyway, I’m not going down without an epic fight.’
So stay positive my dear climate warriors, tree huggers and mermaids at heart. You are all doing amazing, you are the future, you are my examples and inspiration and I believe we can do this, together.
Stay strong x
Mommy, can you tell us about what trees were like?

Last night's #NYTLookWest panel was great. Good talking climate change with Dr. M. Sanjayan, Wendy Schmidt, Matt Peterson, and Andy Revkin. Thanks for the insights, the back and forth, and the sharing of ideas. And thanks to all who came out!
