"WATER IS LIFE"
by Clinton Bopp
Decades ago acres of coastal wetlands were paved over as part of the 51-acre AES power plant in Redondo Beach. More recently the city has become increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of returning warmed water to the ocean after use in cooling the plant. In March, 2020 the sale of the plant to a developer was finalized and while it remains to be seen how soon the plant will be decommissioned there is at least some hope that parts of this parcel may be returned closer to the original state.
When @GabbaGallery put their mural project expertise to work in partnership with @mtle.studios New Zealand born Clinton Bopp was one of the first artists on board and painted this creation on the western-most portion of the quarter mile long Herondo St wall of AES. Applying his unique amalgamation of urban and rural influences Bopp's work explores the interconnectedness of people and the natural world and "Water Is Life" provides a stark contrast between the power plant beyond and what once occupied these lands. @clintonbopp/
