Mokira - Cliphop [2000, Raster-Noton]

The album that provided a name to a certain sub-set of electronic music, Mokira's Cliphop is a cohesion of glittering fragments, twitching and shivering their way into rhythms that dip, bounce, and rise with crackling energy amid the pops.  Tweeting pulse-tones, drifting ambient synth, static percussion breaks, and deep-rolling bass tones are run through a mulcher, with rich, chipped-up material emerging for the listener. 

Occasional phasing is utilized, rotating the tones 'round and 'round headphones or speakers, for an almost hypnotic effect.  Despite the quality, this is music that probably should not be listened to while operating heavy machinery; anywhere else, though, go for it.  Great for introductions to both Mokira and the Raster-Noton record label, and a thoroughly impressive first album for Andreas Tilliander's pseudonym.

Various Artists - Forma. 1.02 [2002, Progressive Form]

This compilation of Japanese artists brings together a number of electronic pieces characterized by unusual sounds, sample- and beat-chopping, and novel approaches to rhythm integration.  It's a bit like the Clicks + Cuts compilations, or the general output of labels like Mille Plateaux and Raster-Noton; focus on adroit use of electronics drives nearly all of the pieces, while micro-second flashes of tone give the impression of melody.

Some of the artists included are Aoki Takamasa, #DE.NIRO, Yasuyuki Tsuchiya, and Yoshihiro Hanno.  Each has their own interesting style, making this compilation a neat look into what the experimental electronic scene of Japan was like a decade ago.
