My friend Sarah (@silhouetteofagirl), who has appeared in my comics from time to time, is going to be at Fanime giving a couple talks! I really recommend checking her out; she’s worked really hard on these and is a fantastic presenter!!
Here’s her words:
Hey y’all,
I’m giving some panels at Fanime and Clockwork Alchemy this weekend! These panels will be focused on political theory and fandom. I’m very excited for these events and I hope y’all can make them!
Living Dystopia: Bioshock
Saturday 4 - 5 pm
Clockwork Alchemy, San Martin Room
Bioshock is a video game about the objectivist city of Rapture, and its decline into the dystopian. This talk will use a variety of political theories to examine the political landscape of Rapture. We will focus on propaganda, political action, the politicization of perspectives, and state power.
I’m huge nerd for Bioshock and political theory. This will go beyond just “Ayn Rand! Objectivism!” and actually discuss the society and structure of Rapture. No prior knowledge of Bioshock is needed and this lecture doesn’t spoiler that much of the game! This is my first time presenting it at a large convention and I’m so excited to debut it!
Fic W(rec)k (16+)
Sunday 11am-1pm
Fanime, Panels 3 Room
Fan fiction is a transformative medium that allows readers and writers to make media into more diverse narratives. We’ll explore diversity in fan fic through a feminist lens, focusing on sexuality, characterization, and representation; how these issues inform queer culture, consent, and identity politics. By addressing fanfic as a movement and what it’s done for fandom by using feminist theory, we’ll analyze themes of sexuality and abuse as well as provide a recuperative reading for fan fiction.
I’ve recently expanded this talk to two hours and I’m very excited to go a bit more in depth with this talk. To be clear, this talk does provide a feminist critique of fan fiction and will go over some pretty intense stuff, but it’s also honestly fun and engaging! It also includes some really amazing slides, let me tell you.
Again, I’m very excited for this and I hope you all can attend!!

I didn’t get many photos this year, but the few I did get are pretty great. Most of these got put on my Insta as well but of course Flickr has the not-cropped-to-a-square versions.
At the steampunk convention this weekend and got a lovely surprise in my tea when I added lime juice!
An evening at the cabaret.
