PENGKALAN KUBOR, Sept 11, 2014:
The impending announcement of the candidate from PAS later today is expected to turn the upcoming Pengkalan Kubor by-election into a closely contested battle, between Umno and PAS.
Tumpat Hospital security guard Mohd Hafizul Hanafi said the decision to field Tumpat former assistant district officer (education department) Mat Razi Mat Ail was a strategic move by Barisan Nasional to retain the state it had won since 2004.
“Mat Razi has the same appeal and charm as the late Datuk Noor Zahidi Omar in terms of grassroots approach and popularity.
“However, his style is very similar to a PAS member as he is a teacher by profession and has set up many pondok schools in the area,” he said when met at Tumpat Hospital here, today.
The 33-year-old hails from the tiny village of Kampung Telaga Nanas, within Kampung Geting, the same village as Mat Razi.
He said that Mat Razi who is popularly known as Ustaz due to his religious background could appeal to the swing voters during the campaigning period.
“Now that PKR is not contesting the seat, I am very sure that the election will be a close call for both parties,” the Umno Pengkalan Kubor Youth member said.
Admitting that he is the sole Umno member in his family, Mohd Hafizul said his support for Umno spurred from Noor Zahidi’s work in the constituency.
“Whenever the people have issues regarding the building of houses, he has always attended to it immediately in comparison to PAS members.
“It is not that PAS members or leaders do not do their work for the community but the results are always delayed,” he added.
Meanwhile, Thai-descent businessman Cheu Ah Ben, 38, said that as long as the candidate delivers to the people of Pengkalan Kubor, it does not matter which party they are from.
“Like the late Noor Zahidi, who always visited the Thai community, and fostered good relations with us, we expect the same from either candidate,” he said when met at the iconic Wat Machimaram Buddhist temple grounds, at Pengkalan Kubor.
Stressing that the 5,000 strong community are generally fence-sitters, Cheu said that it is important for the future assemblyman to respond to the issues afflicting the community immediately.
“Dengue cases in Tumpat and this area especially is second highest in the state after Kota Bharu.
“This is something that needs to be tackled urgently,” he said.
Born and bred in Kelantan, Cheu said that the future assemblyman should also tend to issues pertaining to the business and trade in the area.
He cited that the Thai community here comprised of mostly businessmen and farmers.
“I am running a pet business in the area.
“However it is difficult for me to conduct import and export of pets such as dogs and cats legally and effectively due to the lack of animal vector and quarantine centers in the state,” he said adding that priority was given to only the import of cows and bulls in the state.
He added that the nearest centre was located at Pengkalan Chepa which was nearly 30km away.
