A spontaneous music video we shot in the rain for Close Talker.
Real talk, this new Close Talker is quite a treat. Not only have the Canadian trio shared a fine new single in pilose chugging The Change It Brings, but they’ve also announced a new album entitled How Do We Stay Here, out August 30th! The Canadian indie rock trio follow on last month’s Half Past Nine with a song which explores how time is universal and the only currency we all share. They said: No matter what the situation, everyone is shaped by time. It can change us for the worse, or for the better, but at one point or another, all of us will have to face the force of time. This song, along with our new album, is us trying to wrestle with time. It’s conveys trying to learn from our experiences, trying to keep perspective, trying to progress in this weird world, and sometimes trying not to progress at all; to sit in a moment and soak it in for all it has to offer before it becomes nothing more than a memory. ‘How Do We Stay Here?’ is us navigating through the past two years, to both the good times and the bad that shaped who we are, and learning how to learn from them.” In support of their new music, Close Talker will be touring all around North America and Canada. Find out about their tour via their website, here. The Change It Brings is out everywhere now, here.

You’re a nice guy but
You’re a close talker and your
Teeth are kind of black.

2017 was the very last time we heard from Canadian indie rock trio Close Talker, but we sigh with relief as the group returns now with their new single, Half Past Nine, a tenderly aching slow burn of a beauty steeped in yearning melancholy. The band describes of the song: “A concert is a place where you can find people from every walk of life come together for the same reason. It’s a place where you share something in common with complete strangers and a place where you can experience something transcendent with people you will never even know. ‘Half Past Nine’ is about a concert the three of us attended, at our favorite summer festival. It’s about looking around at friends, at strangers, and seeing each person sing along to words that mean so much to them - words that have carried them through times only they know about. Its about holding on to the moments that you never want to end, and then desperately trying to remember them after they are gone. It takes hindsight to recognize when something profound has happened, but every now and then, you're able to sense it right in the moment. This song is about those moments and the attempts to cling to them.”
As an overly sentimental person, this gently shuffling, dusky hobbling lament aligns with that never fading twinge in my heart. Every moment feels fleeting, and the world is always changing. You never know when you’ll lose someone, to life’s responsibilities, or to something worse. We look backwards with regret and longing. As Close Talker said, we cling. And their heart melting sunset aria is one we’ll cling to forever more; it’s the sonic equivalent of flipping through a photo book of our precious memories. As they say, hindsight is always 20/20.
