TED-ed are like miniature TED talks, but condensed down into a few minutes, and animated, for teachers to use in classrooms, as part of class discussions (and they’re all, including this one, properly closed captioned).
I thought this one would be of particular interest to Tumblr.
(And it has a throw-away line, at the very end, about how Christine de Pizan founded her own publishing house, in Paris -- another industry where women have been erased from history)
More Math Meta (or is that Meta Math?)
In this thread, where people share their thinking while doing an addition problem, @athelind posted a video of the Tom Lehrer’s “New Math.” The second verse of that song is all about Base Eight.
And that reminded me that I’ve now been (semi)converted into base 12, at least for some things. I kinda mix it up between base ten and base 12, depending on what I’m trying to figure out.
And here’s the video that converted me (sorta):
(As he explains at the end of the video, I count the segments of my fingers on my right hand, using my thumb as a ‘pointer.’ I’m not as dexterous with my left hand, so I just count one to five as “normal” with that hand, to keep track of how many units of do I’ve got to. So I can count to 60 on the fingers of two hands)
Oh, and I also learned to count in American Sign Language, back before I hit puberty (when language/math stuff comes more easily). And ASL is sorta like a hybrid between base 5 and base 10:

Is a roughly 18 minute video from Disabled and Lesbian YouTuber Jessica Kellgren-Fozard talking about the financial discrimination disabled people face when they are in relationships -- not just actually just getting married, but even living together, or living in a way that it’s clear to the public that you are a couple. She mostly talks about what it’s currently like in the U.K. (where she lives), but she also touches on the U.S. system of SSI.

When I saw this video in my recommendation feed, last week (as of the time I’m writing this), I thought it was going to be another example of:
“The media is overusing scare words, again, for the sake of click bait. Oh No!”
Instead, it’s a serious exploration of the actual etymology and history of the word, and what we can learn from it if we slow down and think a bit.
Etymology, history, philosophy all braided together. Pleasing to my little geeky heart. Also, it’s properly closed captioned.
A Sesame Street musical skit from my childhood. Also, a big mood.
About halfway through, and I’m continuing to enjoy this series on the intro to linguistics. And I continue to be impressed by the series’s full inclusion of signed languages alongside spoken ones.
