Jamila Woods has recently shared a new song titled “EARTHA” from her upcoming LP LEGACY! LEGACY!, and it’s another absolute stunner. Jamila’s music has always struck a tight balance between timeless soulfulness and groove-ridden immediacy, and “Eartha” is no exception. Over minor organ chords, bubbly synths, and varied, yet minimal percussion Jamila lays out her struggles with finding a partner who will love her the way that she needs to be loved. What begins with what scans like insecurity over perceived shortcomings “I used to be afraid of myself/Hung my smile on a shelf/Hid my teeth when I laughed” shortly transitions into an uncompromising stance of expected cooperation and respect from her partner “I’m trying to see eye to eye/But you look right over me/Your words stuck on repeat/And I’m tired of your shit”. Her knack for irresistible melodies and her expressive vocal range are continually heightened with each new song of hers, lending even further urgency to what she ponders as the song reaches its conclusion “Who’s gonna share my love for me with me?”. “Eartha" ends far too quickly, and is brimming with lush production and a declaration of unwavering self-love. At this moment in time it sounds like Jamila Woods can do no wrong, and I have plenty of reason to believe that LEGACY! LEGACY! will be one of 2019’s best records.
