FACTS ABOUT YOUR WASHING MACHINE (3mins)
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTd7LYWED/?k=1
After months of my folks’ washing machine having an on-off swampy smell, and my dad saying the machine needed to just be rebalanced, or that he was looking for a repair person (and not finding one for their model of machine), the whole thing quit spinning this week.
I executively butted-in, found a repair guy and booked him. He was young, Russian and took it in stride that every time he stopped to look for a new tool or paused to think about his next step, my dad asked him if he needed a paper towel. He kept his laughing to himself when my dad started farting and I chased him down the hall so that he wasn’t just standing over the repair guy doing it. Mom turned to the wall at that point and silently pantomimed banging her head against it. When it’s not totally emotionally distressing, memory-loss elders can be hilarious.
It was the drain pump which had died and which was the source of that swampy smell. It wasn’t cheap but it was faster and easier than trying to buy a whole new machine.
The folks watched the entire repair like it was the most exciting thing they had seen happen in their house in a year, which it was, and I only let them watch because they are now both two weeks past their second COVID vaccination.

The clothes washer repair went well. The type of washer I have needed a new gear assembly (also called a transmission) which includes the impeller shaft, bearings and so forth. Replacement wasn't easy, but it wasn't hard.
After replacing that part, the washer is working alright. For some reason, it still isn't doing its final spin cycle properly, so I may need to dive a little deeper, looking at fault codes and such. But it washes clothes again, and after cleaning the tumbler and everything else in the process of replacing the gear box, the clothes come out really clean. The only inconvenience is needing to tell the washer to do a separate "Drain and Spin" cycle.
(Note that if I don't find fault codes, chances are good that I'll need to replace the control board if and only if my workaround stops working. That part is about $30 used from eBay for my Whirlpool washer.)
Aside from the time it took for me to learn what I needed to do with my washer, the cost of the part was $210, which was the total cost of repair and still 1/3rd the cost of the lowest-priced new washers I see online.
Washer Repair
I am my own clothes washer repair tech.
Mostly, I work based on YouTube videos because the Whirlpool I have is 12 years old and it's very, very easy to find videos for anything I want to do.
The current problem is likely with the bearings just above the engine and below the tub of the washer. To know for sure, I'll need to do some disassembly. After certain identification of the problem, I'll need to get the replacement part(s).
The symptoms are these:
Gravel-like sound when I spin the tub by hand
Sometimes the spin cycle doesn't happen at all (and no troubleshooting codes or special LED blinks are happening)
Within the past week, this has become bad enough to where the spin cycle isn't removing as much water from clothing, which adds more effort to drying. (Incidentally instead of drying anything for longer, if it's mostly dry, I just hang it up somewhere.) It also implies that the motor is pushing harder than it needs to, which probably means the same for the clutch mechanism.
The goal is to keep from needing to purchase a new major appliance, and I'm reasonably sure I can get this done, since I've done other repairs before. Namely, I've replaced the electronic flip doodle that locks the door, which corroded over a year ago, and I cleaned underneath the washer tub. That latter cleaning involved most of the disassembly I'll need to do today or tomorrow to find out for sure what needs to be done with the options being:
Repair with spare parts I may need to special order
Give up and get a new washer
This kind of shit sucks, but it's also kind of exciting. The way I love computational systems is the same way I love mechanical systems, including cars and major appliances affording a plebe like me the ability to do a repair. It's likely that I can do this repair for less than $80 in parts.
