Cloudbridge: Is It Worth It?

If you missed the boat on signing up for climbing Mount Chirripo like we did, there is plenty else to do in San Gerardo.

One of which is further up the road to the entrance of Cerro Chirripo.

Cloudbridge Nature Preserve is a phenomenal hike, with a combination of views that give you the best angles of the surrounding mountains.

But get ready to work on this hike.

We didn’t measure the grade we walked. But it is rough. Just to make it to the trailhead requires climbing the long and winding road through San Gerardo, which is no small task. The road is paved, but a constant slope with no “easy parts” or breaks in the ascension. If you are staying in a hostel near the bus stop, like we did, it is an aggressive mile (or kilometer and a half) to the entrance.

The Cloudbridge reserve itself is like the road to the park on acid. There are a few stones along a sheer dirt trail which is your only traction on the loose soil. Some parts feel a few degrees shy of climbing hand over hand. We consider ourselves in decent shape. And, even so, it was a constant battle from about 200 meters past the entrance beyond.

The trail is worth it, if just for the view.

A local told us the park is usually overlooked in favor of Mount Chirripo. So, if you have the time, or missed out on the limited sign-up window for Chirripo, it is a great alternative.

The park costs only a suggested donation and is well maintained.
