Cloudburst (2011) ★★★★★★★★☆☆
Hiii it's me again! I got really interested in your story called ✨️Cloudburst✨️ can you tell me more about it? Like the characters, worldbuilding, sort of stuff! :D
CLOUDBURST MASTERPOST
hii!! I finally rewrote all the important lore bits and translated the main article. This post is a collection of EVERYTHING about Cloudburst (my original setting) that's been polished to a point I'm actually okay with. I'll add a link to this in my pinned infopost when I get the chance. Thanks for reading! :)
THIS BEAUTIFUL WORLD
The story takes place in a fictional world resembling outer space with planets – here called DISKS. The inhabitants of each disk form their own individual psychoclimate, which directly shapes how that world develops. The more people on a disk, the more stable it runs on a coordinated flow of thought → fewer people means more chaos and abstract mechanics.
Disks that are close to each other can form TRANSITIONS – something like spatial funnels leading from one world to another. Additionally, RIFTS can appear on disks – random entrances/exits scattered across unpredictable coordinates, through which one can enter the CRACK.
THE CRACK
The space between disks. Bottomlessly black and constantly trying to fill everything and everywhere it seeps into. The Crack is destructive to people – even a short stay leads to a painful death. Ordinary people cannot travel between disks (unless they have a transition), but they subconsciously know this concept exists and vaguely guess at some shapeshifter behind it.
RIFTS
There are three types of rifts: organic, inorganic, and artificial.
* Organic – carried by Wanderers and Wayfinders; look like open wounds.
* Inorganic – appear on disks as cataclysms.
* Artificial – either type, but created using special tools (predictable).
WANDERERS & WAYFINDERS
People whom Jitters randomly selects to offer a deal. The deal grants them a ship with immunity to the Crack, allowing them to travel beyond the disks.
The only rule for Wanderers and Wayfinders: never stop traveling. Because of this, they cannot stay on one disk longer than the allotted time; if they violate this, they begin experiencing symptoms similar to ordinary people's Crack intoxication.
You can refuse the deal. But once a contract is signed, it cannot be undone.
For Jitters, this originally was just a way to entertain himself beyond peeking at human routines, but later it turned into a serious problem out of his control.
Wanderers – pilots. Usually each Wanderer has their own personal vessel, but some prefer to team up.
Wayfinders – an additional deal that turns the traveller into something like a canary in a coal mine. Wayfinders sense inorganic rifts better, calculate transition coordinates without prior searching, and remember coordinates of individual disks. You cannot take the Wayfinder deal if you start traveling alone – it doesn't grant a ship.
STORKS & PELICANS
Artificially created creatures that look like giant birds with human faces hidden inside their beaks.
* Storks can stitch rifts shut.
* Pelicans can rip them open.
They can behave very differently – from peaceful to predatory toward humans. The only thing uniting them all is a deep-rooted attachment to their creator.
CHARACTERS
Jitters (rus. Mandraž)
[any pronouns]
An entity dwelling in the Crack. He cannot predict the consequences of his decisions and cannot reverse events. He is a god nobody told that being a god is hard. He can't sit still, but every intervention of his into this already fragile world keeps leading to disasters.
* Jitters navigates the Crack using echolocation. If a disk has a thought flow – he can hear it. If the flow disappears, Jitters loses that world from his sight.
* He dislikes birds.
* If a disk has a rift, Jitters can slip onto it as a temporary shapeshifter projection (for example, he escorts Mutenoon to Home-Dom in the form of a black panther).
Mutenoon
[any pronouns]
The main character, "little wanderer". Wakes up on board his own ship but remembers nothing before that moment. Almost immediately he gets into a crash and, thanks to this mistake, runs into Ruber and Sheva, continuing his journey in their company.
* After a meeting with the Twin Seers, Mutenoon gets his first personal goal: to find the Bird Fairy. He can't explain this urge, but follows it anyway.
* He doesn't speak himself, but uses mimicry. He can repeat other people's phrases with similar intonations.
Ruber
[He/Him]
A wanderer with the temperament of a pilgrim. He has no sense of adventure, and deep down he regrets his decision to leave his home. Years ago, he joined a group of wanderer-enthusiasts with Klok and Syuz. The crew crashes on an uninhabited disk due to a navigation error. The conflict split the group apart, after which Ruber secretly sneaks away to a neighboring disk through an emerging transition. During the escape, he is injured and loses his left eye – leaving an organic rift in its place.
* For Ruber, traveling without a goal is unbearable. He doesn't want to explore new routes and before meeting Mutenoon, he simply convinced Sheva to loop between a few quiet disks and their fragments, delivering packages for isolated communities.
* He is claustrophobic.
Sheva
[She/Her]
A girl working as a navigator aboard Ruber's ship. Before meeting Ruber, she lived on a quiet, small disk with her family. One day, she finds a wounded stork near her home. Her family tries to heal it until the Rippers show up on the disk, looking for the stork.
When they refuse to hand over the bird, the family draws the sect's wrath. The stork is taken by force, the disk is split apart, and its inhabitants are doomed to die. Sheva, caught in the Crack, nearly dissolves, before Jitters finds her and offers the wayfinder deal.
Jitters pieces the girl back together, literally bit by bit, and gives her to Ruber along with a new ship, hoping that forced caregiving will push him to continue traveling.
* Sheva barely remembers her past, but she has nightmares about birds.
Syuz / The Bird Fairy
[She/Her, They/Them]
A semi-mythical wanderer. At the time of the story, she lives in an artificially created space – the Cocoon. Inside it, she creates storks and pelicans, counting the days until her death. The events she's been through have left her heartless and physically devastated, turning her into a whole organic rift held together by armor.
She knows she doesn't have much time left, and this awareness frees her morally.
* Syuz is the adoptive mother of the Seers. She settled them in Home-Dom in the middle of a lake, surrounded by a flock of birds, to protect them from unwanted guests.
* She can "turn" wanderers into birds forcibly submerging them into a controlled rift inside the Cocoon and sealing whatever remains of their minds and memories into the birds.
Klok
[He/Him]
A wanderer who became the leader of the Ripper sect. Together with his followers, he captures storks and pelicans to trade them or turn them into Ripper tools and weapons. Their base is on the Patch – an artificial disk stitched together from dead fragments of other shattered disks.
* The Patch disk becomes a loophole with a tightly controlled climate. It doesn't transmit any thought flow, so Jitters cannot hear it or track what happens inside.
* To work around the "never stop traveling" rule, Klok developed a shift system: some groups return, while others immediately depart.
Burghmeister / The Boy with a Gull
[He/Him]
A fourteen-year-old boy who’s trying to be far too serious for his age. Due to a huge rift on his disk, a chemical accident happens, during which Burghmeister's father ends up on a detached fragment. His disk becomes a prime target for Klok because of its large dead territory, ship graveyards, and workforce.
The Seers (Twin Sisters)
[She/Her, They/Them]
Sema (in blue) and Sima (in white) – sisters living in Home-Dom, in the middle of a lake surrounded by storks and pelicans. They always predict diametrically opposite outcomes, but can never say for sure which one will actually come true.
They don't like being locked up, but they can't leave, because they're afraid of the jungle beyond the lake and cannot survive on their own outside Home-Dom
The Gardener
[any pronouns]
An artificial intelligence who tends to a disk shaped like a garden, alone since the death of his creator, F.
F. couldn't afford the deal due to poor health. Afraid of vanishing without a trace, she created an AI assistant and uploaded all her memories into it, hoping to preserve the flow after her death.

sorry, i DO see anon asking about cloudburst lore. i've been writing the answer for, like… a month now? maybe more, but i'll try to get it done soon. just been really emotionally unstable because of personal stuff and the censorship situation in my country 🫠
