she should have known better than to tell bennie to ‘calm down’ — since when had her hotheaded best friend ever responded well to those words? she’d seen the other girl blow up countless times at other people over less, but lelani still hadn’t seen this coming. stupid, really, because this was probably one of the most stressful situations either of them (but especially bennie) had ever been in, and their newly kindled relationship was bound to start showing cracks. “how am i acting like it doesn’t matter?” she demanded, before forcing herself to even out her tone. “i’m not. i’m just — trying to be reasonable about this.” someone has to be. now that, she definitely shouldn’t say. “someone has to be.” oh, for fuck’s sake.

lelani’s heart ached as she looked at her best friend, the person she loved most in the whole world. bennie was getting married, and she was trying on wedding dresses, for god’s sake, asking for lelani’s opinion here and there as she rotated in front of the store’s multiple floor-length mirrors. it seemed like only yesterday that they’d graduated from high school, arm in arm and all toothy grins in their yearbook photos, swearing to keep in touch and only breaking their promises halfway, because they had grown distant—which was why lelani hadn’t seen this coming. she supposed it was her own fault, being so wrapped up in her own shit, but it still felt like a major curveball. she wanted to tell bennie don’t marry him, cleared her throat to get her friend’s attention but when she opened her mouth to speak what came out was, “i don’t know if that cut is all that flattering.”

rain dripped from the ends of camille’s hair, rivulets of water streaming down her face and shoulders as she stood outside her childhood best friend’s home. she had half a mind to turn away, not knock on the door at all, just go back to her car and not look back, but she was getting soaked. just as she raised her hand to rap on the door, it opened. camille’s mouth opened in an ‘o’ as she looked at her. “hi,” she finally said, aware that it was a feeble greeting, especially when they hadn’t seen each other in so long. “um. i’m sorry to just show up like this, but i…can i come in?”

she squeezed bennie’s hand nervously as the limo pulled into the driveway of the wedding venue. the fact that her best friend had decided to do the exact thing lelani had been hoping she’d do — call the whole wedding off — was exhilarating, but also terrifying. lelani was something of a people pleaser, and the idea of causing this much trouble for everyone wasn’t one she enjoyed. still, she cared far more about bennie’s happiness than anything else. “are you ready?” she asked the blonde quietly, glancing at her and feeling her heart skip at the sight of her. somehow, confessing their feelings to one another had made lelani’s feelings for bennie even more intense. it was like she was a kid again, experiencing her crush for the first time, butterflies and all.

nala chewed on her bottom lip as she looks around for rico. holding onto her cup, she walks through the crowd, greeting people as she squeezes through. how the hell did she lose her roommate in five minutes? they have only been at this party for two hours, and she already feels the effects of her drink. “there you are!” she throws her arms up at seeing rico leaning on a wall. “hey, let’s go sit down on the couch. can you walk?” a frown forms on her face as she wraps her arms around her waist, walking toward the living area. a soft blush form on her cheeks at realizing how close the pair was. damn, she needs to get over this crush and fast. “here. sit down. do you need some water?” she carefully sits rico down on the couch. “so how did it go with that person? you were all over them an hour ago.” she teased as she adds, “do i hear a future hook up story happening soon or what?” sometimes, it sucks hearing about the other’s love life, but as her best friend and roommate, she has to be all ears for her.
