For the fic asks: 17 & 18!
I answered 18 [right here]
17. Describe a fic that is still in the ‘ideas’ stage.
Oh man, this one is actually very difficult. I have so many WIPs and I don’t know what counts as “ideas” because 90% of them have 10k+ words written already, because I am unable to control myself. And because I am in yugioh hell right now (no points for guessing which ship), I have been collecting ideas for what feels like my entire life at this point. I guess the most recent one will do?
Working (and likely permanent) Title: It Takes an Honest Man
It’s 1925. Prohibition is in full swing, and so is organized crime, because most people have decided that Prohibition kinda blows. But, y’know, it’s dangerous to get involved with that sort of thing (i.e. literally the mob), so better to stay away from it. Let’s meet our dumbass protagonists!
It’s Yugi, a Japanese-Jewish second-generation immigrant from Oakland, California! He’s moved to Domino, a city I made up so I don’t have to do research on organized crime in Real Actual Places, for better paying work. Unfortunately for him, the suspiciously well-paying job as a back-room attendant at a local hotel was code for “illegal poker dealer for our basement speakeasy.” Which, of course, is supplied by the local mob. Whoops. He’s trying to keep his head down to provide for his family, but alas, his new employers own most of the people in this city. Including him.
The employers in question? The Saliq Family, The Domino Shade, the people who now own his proverbial sorry ass? Turns out they’re in a bit of trouble.
Protagonist 2: Electric Boogaloo! Atem Saliq, born and raised in Domino, the city that chewed him up and spat him out. Now, he’d decided he’s going to chew it up right back, and so far it’s been working out fairly well. That is, until a rival mob from L.A. starts moving in on his turf. In the beginning, it’s nothing he can’t handle. A hijacking here, a shootout there, easy stuff. But then it starts getting too convenient. Locations too specific, routes too secret to be known by just anyone. There’s a traitor among his own. And he can’t trust any of them to speak the truth.
So, what do you do when you can’t trust anyone you know? Hire a new guy to investigate, of course!
